I see what the article is aiming at, by offering easier options to get you started until you are comfortable to give the soda up entirely for water and the like but I have to agree with those who are mentioning that Diet Soda is terrible for you. Granted no soda is good for you but the aspartame in diet is very bad for anyone's health regardless of size... Overall though it helps stir up some good ideas of things I can do in my own diet using the list.

I don't understand:

26. Swap 1 cup of canned pineapple in heavy syrup for crushed pineapple in water. Save 119 calories!

Is this telling me to replace crushed pineapple in water with pineapple in heavy syrup??? Or does someone want to rephrase this one? How in the world would heavy syrup be better for anyone??

I completely agree with some of the other comments on this article. Diet cola and other diet foods/drinks with no nutritional comments and chemicals that I can't even pronounce are in NO WAY healthy!! Also, really calories aren't the culprit. Eating sensible portions sizes of clean food is all it takes to lose/maintain weight and stay healthy. I'm a bit disappointed that Sparkpeople endorse these kind of recommendations.

Rather than eating fat-free diet food- maybe just experiment with how much mayonnaise or cream cheese or salad dressing you actually need to enjoy your food. Same with cooking, experiment to see how much oil is actually needed or if it's needed at all. If you like soda, experiment with diluting it with cold water rather than drinking weird tasting diet stuff. You might find the taste comes out more that way, especially for fruity or root beer types - even diluted four or five parts water to one part soda. Likewise for fruit juice. Pizza is good food, but just save some for later (slices freeze well). Same with sandwiches and burgers - wrap up half for another meal.

Sadly, I wasn't impressed with this list. Split a pop with a friend... How about drink water instead? A lot of the suggestions were basically to eat less of the same food, or eat a light / low-fat version. Eat a whole medium apple instead of a small candy apple... seriously? Don't coat fruit in sugar... got it! I know there are some people out there that don't know anything about calories, portions, etc so maybe this list would help them (maybe), but for the most part I could find better / more sensable ideas for this list, and I'm no expert. i've definately seen better lists on this site. Keep looking!

this is all to rich for me... I don't drink beverages but green tea and sometimes coffee with a little unsweetened almond milk... 30 calories a cup.... deserts never but maybe fruit sometimes... but fruit is sugar... pizza never... cut out grains... no dairy... yes I already cut a very small steak in half...2 oz and a plate of kale and mushrooms and onions.. I guess I could take it down to 1 oz....I don't eat grains anymore too many calories.

I never would have guessed that grapes instead of raisins made that big of a difference. Thanks.

These are all excellent ideas, but I need to watch my sodium intake. I guess I'll have to weight the options when using these tips.

I'm a bit appalled by this list - could we not 'save' 100 calories by substituting something healthier? Guacamole instead of Hummus, for instance? A lower-carb english muffin instead of a dense, carb and calorie laden bagel? A frozen banana blended with frozen strawberries for a great treat instead of ice cream ?

And what's with all the chemical-laden sugar free suggestions. Show me ONE study that says diet Coke is better for you than regular Coke? It's just bad for you, and I hate that this list is somehow suggesting that it's a 'better' choice.
