I agree with WiseWife. I have lost 20 lbs but I never could have done it on a low calorie diet. Why can't SparkPeople provide more help, hints and aids for those of us on a low carb diet. PLEASE, read the reasearch. It is a safe and effective means of weight control. I have never felf better in my life (I'm 55). In fact, if I go on a binge and eat too many carbs I feel absolutely miserable, groggy and fatigued. This is an extremely doable lifestyle change for me and I invite others to join in. Watch your blood sugar go down, your cholestrol go down and very importantly, your weight go down.

This article is really a big help. My question is--are these figures ok if you're trying to lose weight? I don't want to over do it

Really good comment Jacqueline3 in regards of the misunderstanding about what is a
carbohydrate. I have nothing against Atkins because if you pay close attention to his book, he also recommends eating a larger amount of healthy carbs with protein and fat in much smaller portions. The danger is not the approach itself but the way people interprete it and apply it!

Weird that so many people seem to forget or not know that vegetables are carbohydrates. That's why the food pyramid suggests that 40-50% of your calories should come from carbohydrates... veggies are complex carbs; it's the simple carbohydrates like sugars and white bread that can become problematic when they're a disproportionately high part of your diet. If you're getting your carbs from broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, berries, apples etc. you won't face the problems with insulin resistance and diabetes; it's when you go over board on white sugar, bread, and pasta or starchy veg like potatoes that it can cause issue, and even still you need a few of those types of foods in your diet for energy. People latch onto a term from something like Atkins and try to demonize an entire group of foods, but everything in moderation, and carbohydrates are what fuel your body so you have the energy to exercise; it's just a good idea to get most of your carb load from the complex side of the carb chain.

Good article. In a busy word one needs to have more definition of what items carbohydrates, fats and protein mean in terms of the supermarket shelves. You can read the labels. However when you think carbohydrate you need a long list to click in place in your brain similarly for fats and protein.

I personally feel that this diet, and the food pyramid is the reason for the obesity 'epidemic' and that eating a diet this high in carbs is what made me a diabetic. Thanks but no thanks, Atkins has helped me lose weight, without feeling like I'm starving, and my blood glucose is in the non-diabetic range without medication.

Thank you for the breakdown.
When i went to see a dietitian she didn't even go over this with me at all. I get better advice online from general articles and from other sparkers than i did with her.
