Ideas to Decrease Calories and Boost Nutrition

-- By SparkPeople Editorial Staff

It's easy to get off track when it comes to eating during the holidays. Although the traditional holiday table can be filled with high calorie and high fat foods, there are ways to save calories without sacrificing taste. Here SparkPeople's experts share healthy makeovers of some of their favorite dishes.

Chris Downie, Motivation Expert and SparkPeople Founder

"My wife Karina makes a few different dishes: either gluten-free or whole grain stuffing for Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie with coconut milk instead of heavy condensed milk (this is a tasty one!), she tries to have 3 types of veggies and keep them lightly cooked so they retain more nutrients, and makes her own cranberry sauce using half the sugar."

Tanya Jolliffe, Healthy Eating Expert and Community Moderator

"We have a favorite sweet potato dish that includes sugar, eggs, and is topped with butter, pecans and brown sugar. This year I just baked sweet potatoes and topped them cinnamon and pecans and a little butter instead."

Becky Hand, Registered and Licensed Dietitian

"Veggie Pizza: Using the lower fat crescent rolls as the crust, the spread using low fat mayonnaise and low fat cream cheese, extra veggies (of course), and a sprinkling of sharp cheddar cheese."
