It features the infamous courtroom on which the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

The book is said to have been based upon this courthouse, especially since Lee’s father was also a lawyer back in the day.

Talladega Superspeedway

Talladega Superspeedway is a motorsports complex located north of Talladega, Alabama.

It is located on an old abandoned airfield just outside the small city of Lincoln.

It was constructed by International Speedway Corporation, a business controlled by the France Family, in the 1960s.

Talladega is most known for its steep banking and the location of the start/finish line which is closer to turn one than at Daytona International Speedway.

Submitted by VEHAMILTON1

One of the most exciting races of any NASCAR season is always held at Talladega.

And not far from there is the Talladega Gran Prix Raceway in Munford, AL!

Talladega Gran Prix Raceway is a 1.33 mile 10 turn road course located near Munford, Alabama.

"Little Tally," as it is also known, has no affiliation with Talladega Superspeedway.

Instead, it takes its name from the nearby Talladega National Forest.

No. Cooked right, they have a naturally tangy flavor, smokey, tender, juicy and delicious!

Good Ham Bean Soup
Very Good 4.3/5

Time to Pick a Bone
You can make a good ham and bean soup using just cubes of ham alone, but to get the best flavor you should use a ham bone. You can get your ham bone from the butcher, since they will often give them away or sell them very cheaply, or you can use a leftover bone from a ham that you have served for dinner.

If you are making a ham for dinner, then any leftover ham can be used in the soup as well. In fact, the best ham and bean soup recipes use both ham bones as well as cubes of ham.

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, the last night blow out celebration of eating richer, fatty foods before Lent.

Lent is the Christian tradition of confession, fasting and repentance before Lent begins the following day on Ash Wednesday.

Folks wear costumes and masks, attend dances, sports competitions and parades where members of societies, often masked, ride on floats or horseback, toss gifts, known as throws: necklaces of plastic beads, doubloon coins, decorated plastic cups, candy, wrapped cakes or snacks, stuffed animals, and small toys, footballs, frisbees, or whistles to the general public.

Then folks party all night long, in the bars or in the streets. Some go on to private clubs, masked balls or dances, where non-masked men wear white tie and tails and the women wear full length evening gowns treating the balls as an extension of the debutante season of their exclusive social circles.

A twist on the southern candy. All the nutty, brown-sugar flavor of pralines in an easier-to-make, easier-to-store, and easier-to-eat bar. Also, for those who LOVE pecan pralines but find that eating pure sugar is slightly sickening, this is a great alternative. While still not a healthy snack, they are incredibly good and freeze well. Splenda can be substituted for about half of sugar.
Not including edges: 1 1/3" by 2" bar per serving, 36 servings

Founded in 1670, Charleston was originally named Charles Towne.

The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 revolutionized the crop's production and cotton became South Carolina's major export.

Cotton plantations relied heavily on slave labor and by the mid-18th century Charles Towne became the main dropping-off point for Africans captured and transported to the Americas for sale as slaves.

Charles Towne became the wealthiest city in the south.

In the first half of the 19th century, South Carolinians became more devoted to the idea that state's rights were superior to the Federal government's authority.

In 1832 South Carolina passed an ordinance of nullification, a procedure in which a state could in effect repeal a Federal law, directed against the most recent tariff acts.

Soon Federal soldiers were dispensed to Charleston's forts and began to collect tariffs by force. A compromise was reached that would gradually reduce the tariffs, but the underlying argument over state's rights escalated in the coming decades.

On December 20, 1860, following the election of Abraham Lincoln, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to secede from the Union.

On January 9, 1861, Citadel cadets opened fire on the Union ship Star of the West entering Charleston's harbor.

On April 12, 1861, shore batteries under the command of General Pierre G. T. Beauregard opened fire on the Union-held Fort Sumter in the harbor.

After a 34-hour bombardment, Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort, thus starting the war.

Union forces repeatedly bombarded the city, causing vast damage, and kept up a blockade that shut down most commercial traffic.

In 1865, Union troops moved into the city, and took control of many sites, including the United States Arsenal, which the Confederate Army had seized at the outbreak of the war.

The War Department also confiscated the grounds and buildings of the Citadel Military Academy, and used this as a federal garrison for over seventeen years.

It was finally returned to the state and reopened as a military college in 1882.

The Civil War ended in Charelston, SC where it began.

The war had shattered the prosperity of the antebellum city. And freed slaves were faced with the poverty and discrimination that still poisons our country today.

By far, this is my favorite beach!

Edisto Beach is one of the few remaining family-oriented beach in a quiet little town with moderate temperature all year round.

And it is the home of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle that weighs approximately 300 -1,000 pounds.

Enjoy walking a pristine beach, riding bikes, fish, golf, kayaking or hike a nature trail.

Enjoy local fish, shrimp, crabs and oysters.

Submitted by VEHAMILTON1

During late spring and summer, female Loggerhead Sea Turtles leave the ocean only to lay eggs.

After dragging herself up onto Edisto Beach, she hollows out a pit with her back flippers and deposits an average of 100 eggs the size of ping pong balls.

When the last egg is laid, she covers the eggs with sand and flings more sand about with her flippers to erase any signs of the nest.

After about two months, monitored closely, the hatchling turtles emerge at night to go back into the sea.

As you enter the grounds, you drive down an old oak tree lined dirt road until you see a beautiful antibellum mansion and farm.

Boone Hall Plantation is the oldest fully working plantation in the United States.

Visit the mansion and the grounds, the farm and petting zoo, as well as historic cabins that housed the slaves that worked the fields.

The workers wear the clothing from that period and demonstrate tools and methods of farming and crafts.
