The sugar in this tomato based soup vegetable is a southern thing. Great on a cold day, with a grilled cheese sandwich.
If you want a vegetable beef, cut 1/2 pound of stew beef into 1/4 inch pieces, saute in 1 table spoons of canola oil in the soup pot on high flame to fully brown meat (dont worry about the sticking bits, pan deglazes as the soup cooks.)
