I have made my own variation of this recipe; five spice is the key ingredient (cinnamon, fennel, star anise, ginger, cloves).

The original recipe calls for 1/3 c Plum Sauce as a condiment, which is omitted here for caloric reasons. Another key factor is that I steam the meatballs, rather than fry them, as suggested in the original recipe. Finally, I use turkey rather than beef or pork for my meatballs.That way they're leaner!
