I haven't tried this yet, but am planning to make it for an upcoming camping/hiking trip. Saw the comments below and have to say that it is SUPPOSED to be high-calorie, it's for energy for people hiking and such. And no, eating a candy bar would not be better. Submitted by:

Before making check the ingredients for the items included . I avoid all soy products as they are probably from GMO soybeans and bad for my thyroid. Also what is the sugar content and source? Use fewer ingredients that are homemade or organic. Use soaked and dried nuts that are easier to digest. Submitted by:

looks really good, but honestly, 345 calories for 1/4 of a cup? That's way out of my acceptable range. I use a 100 calorie pack of almonds, a miniature box of raisins, and 10 dark chocolate M&Ms..191 calories..much more acceptable in my program.. Submitted by:

Sure! It's really TASTY but have to agree with the "stop at 1/4 C" comment!! If I'm counting calories, this is NOT a good way to spend them! I can have 3-4 pieces of fruit, all the veggies I could chew or a double dip of good ice cream for this little fourth of a cup and STILL get the nutrition! Submitted by:

Sounds great, except for the calorie count on such a small serving. As others have said, having those ingredients in the house, having a large qty laying around would be difficult to resist. A lot of people are complaining about the fat/calorie count. If you shop at a whole food store you can choose your own lower fat, lower sugar, higher fibre choices. Choose unsweetened berries, lower fat nuts & high fibre cereals! Great snack when I'm running or hiking!!! Submitted by:

No trail mix is low in calories. But it looks healthy. I will make a batch for my husband, who needs more calories than i do, especially since i make low calorie meals and he burns tons of calories. Don't want the guy to waste away to nothingness.. I need him around. (Ha.)

Fun recipe to play with! We used raisins, Cheerios, sunflower seeds and butterscotch chips in our first batch. Kind of a wierd combo, but it's really good! Great "starter" recipe. So many variations you can make, I would add dried cranberries (because I love them). Great idea to portion this out into individual snack-size bags; less temptation to eat more! Energizing yet healthy. Maybe hi-fat, but it's from the nuts--a GOOD fat. Submitted by:

I calcualted this using shredded wheat, peanuts, M&M's and mixed dried fruit. It makes 12 x 1/4 c. serving = 3 c. total.

Yum! Keeps one full for a while.
For all those who are complaining about the high calorie content: Yes, it is high in calories. Yes, the fat content is high. But that's because of the nuts, which contain HEALTHY fats. A little goes a long way with almost all trail mixes.

I could not trust myself with a whole batch so.....using the nutrition labels on the products, I came up with this 1 serving recipe and fewer calories: 2T raisins, 54 calories; 1/4 C Cheerios, 25 cal; 1/2 oz. mixed nuts, 85 cal.; 1 T Hershey's semi sweet chocolate pieces, 70 calories; 234 calories. If you look at the calorie breakdown by ingredient it turns out a serving size is 3/4 cup, not 1/4 cup, so divide by three to get the real calorie count!

I made this with a wide variety of cereal, dried fruits, nut and butterscotch chips and it came out to 127 calories per 1/4 cup.

Here is a great way to watch calories but still have a healthy mix: use GoLean cereal (high fiber, high protein, lower sugar, lower calorie) a smaller proportion of raisins, and honey roasted soy nuts. And measure and put portions in small glass or plastic containers. Submitted by:

My son is a cub scout. I love the trail mix they sell but it is high in calories. I used the same idea and came up with cheerios, dried cranberries, unsalted sunflower seeds, and pretzels. No, thanks. A quarter cup is barely a handful.
