Zesty Turkey Sloppy Joe

Submitted by: CRIS76

Introduction

Great flavor, a little zing! Great flavor, a little zing!
Number of Servings: 8

Ingredients

    1 pound ground turkey
    1 medium onion, chopped
    1 green bell pepper, chopped
    1 tsp minced garlic
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1 Tblsp lemon juice
    1/2 cup ketchup
    1/3 cup BBQ sauce

Directions

In a skillet, brown the turkey along with the onion, bell pepper, and garlic until the turkey is cooked completely through. Be sure to break up the turkey into small pieces - large chunks just aren't that appealing in sloppy joe!

Once the turkey is done, add the remaining ingredients and allow to cook until heated all the way through.

Take caution that you do not want to burn the mix after adding the ketchup and bbq sauce.

I did get this recipe from another Sparker but did not like the ketchup to BBQ ratio so I modified it a bit.

Saved calories by eating it with a slice of Kraft Free American cheese on a whole wheat pita.

Makes approximately 8 servings; 1 serving = 1/2 cup

Number of Servings: 8

This is the best! I make it on Sundays and eat it for lunch everyday! It's the perfect combination of rich and sweet. I didn't have BBQ sauce, so I made my own with ketchup, mustard, vinegar, and chili sauce. - 4/17/10

  • I love this recipe. I'm not great in the kitchen, but this is super easy, quick, and makes a lot (since it's just me eating it!). I can use it as both sandwich filler or in combination with brown rice or pasta for a quick lunch. I added some mushrooms to it, and it tastes great. - 2/11/13

  • Delicious! My husband was very skeptical of this recipe since he is a huge fan of the Manwich Sloppy Joe in the can that you mix with ground beef but he LOVED it. The whole family did! I love that I found a healthier version to make now. - 11/11/10

  • I made these for my husband. At first he was saddened that they were not 'traditional' Joes. However, he now likes them better than the Joes with ground beef and a can of manwich.
