Ingredients

    1c Steel Cut Oats
    1c 1% Milk
    3c Water
    1 Medium Apple
    1 tbsp Cinnamon
    1/4 tsp Cloves
    1 tbsp Candied Ginger, chopped
    2 tsp Vanilla Extract
    6 packed tsp Brown Sugar
    12 tbsp chopped walnuts or walnut pieces

Directions

Put steel oats, water, and milk in a covered saucepan and bring to a boil. While you're waiting for the boil, dice the apple. As soon as the oats come to a boil, remove the lid from the saucepan and add the apple, cinnamon, cloves, and candied ginger. Cook at a rolling boil for about 5 minutes until mixture starts to thicken slightly.

After five minutes, lower the heat. Cook at a simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat, and stir in the vanilla extract. Spoon oatmeal into six bowls, and top each bowl with a teaspoon of brown sugar and two tablespoons of chopped walnuts.
