Ingredients

    Onions, raw, 1 cup, chopped
    Red Ripe Tomatoes, 3 medium whole
    Garlic, 10 clove
    Spinach, fresh, 1 bunch
    asda chick pea dhal, 100 gram(s)
    Enova,(soybean oil and canola oil)

    Salt, 1 tbsp
    Raja Foods Swad Chilli Powder, 5 gram(s)
    coriander powder, 2 serving
    Turmeric, ground, 1 tsp

    Enova,(soybean oil and canola oil), 1 tbsp (remove)
    Cumin seed, 2 tsp

Directions

Use a pressure cooker.

Heat oil, add onion and saute till pink. Grind tomatoes and garlic cloves. Add this to the onions, add the chick peas (soaked for about 30mins to 1 hour), then the spinach (chopped), the salt, red chilli powder (can substitute with green chillies split in half), coriander powder and turmeric powder. Add about 1 cup water and close the lid to the cooker. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.

When the steam is released from the cooker (on its own when kept aside), open the lid and mash well with wooden spatula till the 'look' of the dal is uniform. If the consistency is too watery, heat till desired consistency is obtained.

Take about 2tbsp oil in the smallest vessel and heat. Add cumin and allow to heat on low-medium heat till it turns light brown/crackles. Pour this carefully into the spinach dal and mix well. Serve hot and enjoy with rice or chapati/tortillas.

PS. You can add cubed carrots, pumpkin, etc for more nutrition and substitute chick peas with split green lentils for variety / modifications to suit your taste.

  • Lovely Bhaji--love Sai bhaji and was happy to see this uncomplicated method of preparing it.Only one question though---I think this should serve 4-6----the serving size is too large for 1 person!!! - 7/14/10
