Ingredients

Rinse split peas in cold water
Add to 5 cups of water in a stock pot
Saute onion in garlic and oil until transparent in a frying pan
Add to pot
dice tomato, potato and carrots
Add to pot
Add spices
Boil for 30 minutes on high, then cover and simmer until tender (about 1 hour).
You can puree (all or any portion) in blender for a smoother soup if desired.

Makes 6 1-cup servings.
