Smoked Sausage Tomato Sauce

Submitted by: KISSYTINA

Introduction

This is just another recipe I made up with ingredients I had laying around. It was especially delicious served over some Whole Grain Pasta. It's a nice, meaty sauce, that provides an alternative to the traditional meat sauce. This is just another recipe I made up with ingredients I had laying around. Ingredients

1 package Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage, chopped into half-inch cubes
    1 Yellow Onion, chopped
    2 cloves Garlic, minced
1 can Del Monte Diced Tomatoes, No Salt Added
    1 can Hunt's Tomato Sauce
Land O Lakes Unsalted Butter, 1 Tbsp
    The following seasonings, to taste:
    Salt
    Black Pepper
    Dried Oregano
    Dried Thyme
    Dried Parsley

Directions

Melt the butter in a non-stick skillet. Sautee the onions in the butter until they start to soften. Add the Garlic. Add the Diced Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce, Smoked Sausage and seasoning. Let simmer for 20 minutes, until the sauce thickens and the sausage is thoroughly heated through.

This recipe makes about 5 (1 Cup) Servings.

I used the sauce to top some whole grain pasta, and added a bit of grated Parmesan and a couple generous hand-fulls of Baby Spinach. Yummy!

(*I had to put a value on the salt, pepper, and other seasonings, even though it was only "to taste." Therefore, the sodium content may vary, and may not be nearly as high as the nutrition information shows.*)
