I make a big batch of split pea soup and then divide it up into serving size containers. It freezes well. Unfortunately, we're alergic to pork so I have to use smoked turkey instead. - 6/7/09

Great way to use up leftoverd Easter Ham!
I cooked on low while I was at work, over 10 hours - the peas broke down. Very good if you like thick, hearty soup! - 3/26/08

This was an excellent recipe, but the macros are wrong. A 1lb bag of dried split peas has 273 grams of carbs and 117 grams of protein, divided into 8 servings would be 34g of carbs and 14.8 grams of protein... mind you this is without adding the ham and other veggies which drives it up quite a bit. - 11/11/10

At least my boyfriend thinks its incredible - almost as good as his mom's. I added minced garlic and used vegetable broth instead of water for a little more flavor. We soaked the peas overnight before cooking and added a little cornstarch to thicken it up. Next time I won't use 8 cups of broth. - 1/23/11

I made this last night and it is delicious! I followed the recipe exactly except instead of Morton brand Nature's Seasons Seasoning Blend I used Mortons Season salt and cooked it on low for 9-10 hours. - 10/6/10

I have to admit, this is probably the best split pea soup I have EVER had. I will never ever ever eat this soup from a can again!!!!!! I did make a couple changes. I used 4 cups of chicken broth, 3 cups ham, 2 cups carrots, and omitted seasoning. Hard to not eat the whole pot in one sitting! - 1/13/13

I found this really easy to make. I didn't use the spice blend suggested, instead I just added Thyme, bay leaf and marjoram. You know that it's done when the split peas turn to mush. - 2/1/11

  • I soaked the peas overnight; sauted the onion, carrots, and celery in a little olive oil with some crushed garlic; added a pinch of marjoram, a pinch of ceyenne pepper, and about 10 shakes of crushed red pepper flakes to add a little flare. Next time I will add a bay leaf as well. - 11/19/13

  • A wonderful soup for fall! I didn't have the Mortons seasoning and it was still yummy. I like lots of carrots in mine, so probably used 2-3 cups. Delicious! - 10/12/13

  • This is the best recipe for split pea soup I have ever had. I think the Morton's seasoning is the secret, and one TBS was enough for me!! It is just great .. I added two vegetable bouillon cubes just for fun. Tastes delicious!! - 7/20/13

  • We loved it. My husband and 5 y.o. son ate every bit. The nutrition was way off, though. Recalculated based on the bag of beans I bought and 2 cu ham, and it was about 230 calories per serving, 8 servings. Worth it, though. Very filling! - 10/14/12

  • Basically the same recipe I've used for years. I do add Thyme, bay leaves and Marjoram to season. I also saute the
veggies to bring out the flavor. I used the bone from the Easter ham. Add salt after cooking, as the amount from the bone will vary widely. Go with 6 C. water if you like it thicker. - 5/4/11

  • So fast to prepare, only needs the odd stir during cooking. I made it exactly as listed, but with an Australian alternative to the listed seasoning blend and it was absolutely fantastic. Couldn't have been more tasty, and the texture was perfect. Very filling, and far better than my old recipe. YUM! - 10/20/10

  • I cooked this on high for about 8 hours and the split peas were still not all the way soft. This hasn't happened with any other recipes in my cooker before. It was disappointing. - 2/19/10

  • I made this on the stove top after work because I wanted it for dinner. Cooks in 1 hour or less depending on how soft you want the peas. Don't add salt until the peas split open (about 30-40 min) then salt if you like. Salt can make the peas tough.
Comfort food thats healthy. - 1/20/10
