Ingredients

    -For the steak:
    1 teaspoon canola oil
    1 pound flank steak
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon garam masala (or 1 tablespoon curry powder plus 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon)

    For the salsa:
2 tablespoons cumin seeds (or 1 tablespoon ground cumin)
    1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/2 pound green beans, blanched and chopped into 1-inch pieces
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
    1 large tomato, diced
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Zest and juice of 1/2 lime

Directions

Preheat the broiler, stove top grill pan, or grill to high heat.

Spread the oil evenly over the steak, season with salt and pepper and massage the garam masala or curry powder mixture into the steak. Set aside.

Heat a small, dry skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cumin seeds and toast, stirring frequently, until they are fragrant, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do not burn. (You don't need to toast the ground cumin if using.) Transfer to a medium bowl.

Add all the remaining ingredients for the salsa to the cumin seeds and set aside. The salsa can be made an hour in advance and kept refrigerated.
Cook the steak for 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium rare. Remove to a cutting board and let the meat rest for 5 minutes. Slice the steak thinly, in the opposite direction of the grain. Top with the salsa and serve immediately.
