Pawnee Fried Bread

Submitted by: WICKEDKISSES

Introduction

This may not be 'low-cal' but you can use *any* oil you like to fry with, or a special deep frying oil. I use a cast iron skillet to make this. You want enough oil to come about halfway up the side of the skillet. This may not be 'low-cal' but you can use *any* oil you like to fry with, or a special deep frying oil. Ingredients

    *Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, unenriched, 2 cup (remove)
    * Garlic powder, 1 tbsp
    * Salt, 1 tsp
    * Baking Powder, 1 tsp
    * Water, tap, 5 fl oz
    *Cooking Oil, 1 tbsp (For nutritional purposes this is about how much oil gets absorbed by the frying process)
    *Cooking oil(not absorbed) about 2 cups

Directions

Preheat pan full of oil (about 350F but since I don't have a thermometer, use your best judgement)
Combine all dry ingredients. Slowly add water while stirring(I use a fork) until it forms a firm, non sticky dough. Turn out onto floured board and knead until soft and pliable. Divide into 4 pieces. With each piece, roll into a sphere, then flatten, stretching more than pressing. *DO NOT USE ROLLING PIN* and avoid drying out with excess flour. When the round is about 1/4 inch thick, poke a hole in the center, and prick around the edges with fork.
Fry in hot oil, turning until golden brown on both sides. Repeat with all pieces.
I like to serve this with dip, especially spinach/artichoke dip, but it also makes good open faced sandwiches.

Serving Size: One flat bread
