IntroductionMake it vegan or not, a nice basic apple crisp recipe. We like less topping, a bit less sugar, and added raisins. Make it vegan or not, a nice basic apple crisp recipe. We like less topping, a bit less sugar, and added raisins.
1-c. whole wheat flour
1-c. rolled oats
¾-c. brown sugar
20 whole, chopped, or sliced almonds (pecans or walnuts are also nice)
½-cup butter or 100% vegan buttery spread
6 c. your favorite apples (washed, peeled and sliced)
1 tbsp. vanilla
The original recipe calls for 1 cup of buttery spread (16 tablespoons) but that's not the amount used in the nutritional calculation (only 10 tablespoons there).
I cut the amount of all the topping ingredients in half, and cut the sugar back even further. I prefer to mix the nuts with the crisp topping before baking. Adding raisins or cranberries is also a personal preference.
For my family, it made 8 servings.
Mix all the dry ingredients together. Cut in the vegan butter spread. Then set aside while you prepare the apples.
Combine the apples, raisins, vanilla and 1/3 of the dry mixture. Spread on the bottom of a 9" x 13" baking dish (I used glass). Then cover with the remaining crumbs mixed with the almonds and press down gently. You may use a small baking dish, and cut the recipe in half.
Bake in the preheated 350 degree oven for 35 - 40 minutes, until the apples are tender.
