1 cup dry long grain rice (+2 cups water, cooked)
1.5 tbsp sesame oil
3/4 pkg of frozen broccoli pieces
5 oz lean beef (stir fry or steak) chopped
1 onion, chopped
6 tbsp teriyaki sauce (approx)
1 tbsp corn starch
1/3 cup soy sauce
3 cloves garlic (crushed/minced)
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp chinese 5-spice powder (to taste)
Sauce ingredients are to taste. Start with less soy-sauce and chinese five-spice, adding more to taste as you cook.
Start with less sesame oil - it adds a wonderful authentic flavour, but you may need less. You can also substitute plain vegetable oil.
If sauce is too thin, mix 1 tsp of additional cornstarch with a small amount of water and add to the sauce. Cornstarch needs to boil to chicken.
Mix sauce ingredients in container until well blended.
Over high heat, warm sesame oil in very large frying pan or wok. When oil is warm and flows freely (a few seconds to less than 1 min), add beef, and cook for 3 minutes, until approximately half-cooked.
Add chopped onion, and cook until beef is no longer pink.
Add frozen broccoli pieces and stir continually. Add well mixed sauce. Cook over med-high heat, stirring continually until broccoli is hot but not limp, and sauce is thick.
Serve immediately over rice.
