I made this the other day and just finished the last serving for breakfast this morning. It was tasty, but I added some splenda and soy milk. I think I'll triple the batch the next time I make it, it got crispy around the edges of the crockpot and the crock was hard to clean. Thanks! - 9/24/09

This sounds like a great overnight "oatmeal" recipe. When I make it, I will boost the protein by stirring in some vanilla flavored soy powder before serving it. I will also wait until serving time to add the cinnamon, and maybe a dash of nutmeg! - 3/11/08

Recipe was delicious. However it cooked in 3 hours not 6-8hours. It makes a lot so you have more for another day! - 11/11/11

I was out of quinoa and barley, so I substituted millet and buckwheat (which is actually a fruit). I agree with others that this was bland, but next time I will add raisins and perhaps a drop or two of organic maple syrup. - 7/10/10

  • Sounds like a sort of porridge with a difference - something I could maybe cope with, so long as it's cooked the day before, and folk reckon it can be eaten next day. - 3/18/13

  • I'm giving it a 3 star because even though it is quite bland, it is so darn healthy. I think the recipe is a nice clean palette to dress up with our individual tastes. Next time I am going to try adding some coconut and also use almond milk instead of water. Maybe add a little dried fruit, too. - 10/24/12

  • I made as described and found it utterly inedible. The flavor was flat and no amount of sweetener was going to cheer it up. I even added a pinch of salt to try to enhance it. And yes, it's a FIVE grain dish. - 6/13/11

  • I tried this this morning and it was ok, I added nutmeg to give it more flavour, next time might add a little bit of soya milk or sweetener as it was a little bland. - 5/9/11

Has anyone tried making this using canned pumpkin puree? Or any thoughts on how much puree to substitute in with the water? My husband is a picky eater, I was thinking if I could make this and give it a pumpkin pie taste he might go for it. - 4/7/10

  • I used my coffe grinder for the heavier grains so it wasn't as chunky(young children and textures) I do like it but find it a little bland. I love the idea of it and wondered about adding flax, cream of wheat, and cornmeal to give it more body or something...who says it can't be an 8 grain? - 3/14/08
