5 cups of flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 lb butter (1 stick)
1 tsp baking soda
2 1/2 cups raisins (soak in warm water20 min)
1 tbl caraway seeds
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 large egg, beaten
Soak raisins in warm water for 20 minutes. Drain
sift together first 5 ingredients
Cut in the butter and mix thoroughly with your hands until it gets grainy. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.
Add buttermilk and egg. Stir until well moisiened.
Divide dough between two greased bread pans.
Bake for 1 hour. Cool in pans for 5 minutes. Transfer to wire rack.
Serving Size: makes about 40 .25 inch slices
