No-Fail Grilled Tofu

No-Fail Grilled Tofu

Introduction

Tofu is the little black dress of veg proteins. Dress it up, dress it down, grill it up! Tofu is the little black dress of veg proteins. Dress it up, dress it down, grill it up!
Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

1/2 cup marinade (I used teriyaki sauce)
1 block extra firm tofu, drained and pressed
nonstick cooking spray or olive oil

Tips

Tofu tends to stick to the grill, so prevent that by making sure your grill is clean, not moving it around (only flip it once), and using a bit of oil or cooking spray on the surface.
I like to grill up several blocks at once and use the tofu on salads and in sandwiches throughout the week.

Directions

Slice the block of tofu into four pieces.
Marinate the tofu in your choice of sauce or marinade for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
Drain excess marinade from the tofu. Spritz the tofu on both sides with nonstick spray or brush on olive oil.
Grill for 6-7 minutes per side.
Serve immediately.

NOTE: You will only use about half the marinade, so I calculated the nutrition info accordingly.

Serving Size: 1 slice tofu (4 slices or 8 cubes per block)

What is the point without a recipe for the marinade? That pretty much reduces the nutrition info and calorie count to pure speculation, doesn't it? - 5/16/12

This is not much of a recipe! Where are the directions and ingredients for the marinade?!? Also, what items do you reccommend we put on the kabob with the tofu, is that artichokes in the pic? I am very dissappointed, I expect more from Spark, I ususally always like the recipes. - 5/16/12

I only gave this recipe two stars because There was no mention of vegi's used with the grilled tofu or the recipe of the dip in the picture. Good tips though on the grilling aspect! - 5/21/12

Any chance SP_Steph could provide a marinade recipe that would meet the nutritional info in this recipe? Or what she used. Since it says to marinate in "your choice" I'm wondering if the nutritional info includes or excludes the marinade. This looks like something we'd really enjoy. Thanks for this! - 5/16/12

I love tofu! I store mine in the freezer and transfer it to the frig a day or two before cooking it. It is easier to use hands to squeeze out liquid and is sturdier and easier to handle. It also gives it a chewier texture. - 5/17/13

You can also make your own, as you know tofu takes on any taste. We have a real nice greek restaurant in our area. I buy there homemade salad dressing all the time and use about 1/2 cup. for the nutritional value I use the conten on the bottle and on the tofu and divide it by the portion :) - 5/16/13

  • Thanks for the recipe with great tips on how to grill tofu. I don't have a grill as I live in an apartment, but am going to try using my sear skillet and my oven broiler - will post back if successful. Would love to see more vegan recipes! - 5/20/13

I've heard about grilling tofu and have wanted to try it but wasn't sure how to go about it, so thanks! I can never get my tofu crispy in the wok, I don't know why, so I'm hoping this will do the trick. Can't wait to try it. I have a marinade I already love. - 5/18/12

Thank-you so much Stepf for the vegan option. I really really appreciate it. And I love tofu too. Have you tried scrambling tofu? - 5/17/12

  • I do something like this as well, using a soy sauce marinade. I also use fresh rosemary branches for the grilling sticks - to add flavor on the inside of the tofu pieces. - 5/17/12

  • Does anyone know if you can use a George formen style grill for this? I live in an apartment so I don't own a regular grill. Just a 4 in 1 grill/griddle (it is technically GE brand, but it is like a George formans grill) - 5/16/12

Perhaps it's time to dump the chef?! Clicking on the marinade link for a meatless meal only to get a commercial for Tyson meat?? No wonder people don't bother buying the cookbook! - 5/16/12
