ground beef, brown & drain (or turkey if you like) 16 oz.
garlic, minced, I use at least 3 cloves
onion minced if you like
2 28oz cans tomato puree see Note
spices, basil, Italian, garlic, oregano, parsley all to taste.
olive oil to brown the meat, onions and garlic
sugar just a pinch!
Note: In the summer I would use mostly fresh Roma tomatoes from my garden. The rest of the year I use a can of crushed tomatoes, a can of tomato puree and a can of whole tomatoes that I break into pieces with my hand. Also you must use 3 Bay Leaves, that is the key to the great flavor.
Of course, momma only used plum tomatoes when she had them. She also used Italian sausage. I tried to make a lower sodium version but if I had the sausage I'd boil them first, then brown and add to sauce. Also, sometimes she would add pork with bones to the sauce. Now that I think about it, this isn't anything like momma's !
