Syrian Style Greens Beans with Tomatoes

Introduction

Tired of the same ol' green beans? Then, try this recipe! Tired of the same ol' green beans? Then, try this recipe!
Number of Servings: 3

Ingredients

    4 cups fresh green beans, cut
    4 cups tomatoes, chopped
    2 cloves garlic, crushed
    2 tbsp olive oil

Directions

Cut the green beans and let them soak for 30 minutes.
Place the oil in a bottom heavy pan. When heated, add the green beans.
Saute' the green beans for about 30 minutes on high.
Stir occasionally.
Add the tomatoes and saute' for another 30 minutes.
Stir occasionally.
Add the garlic.
Saute' for another 5 minutes.
Serve either hot or cold with Arabic bread.

    To those wondering about the time, I found other recipes for Syrian Green Beans and they also had long cooking times. One said "Syrians like it cooked until the green beans are turning brownish in color. The idea is not to saute them, but to let them steam in the moisture released by ..." - 11/30/08

    This recipe sounds delicious; but, I sauted the garlic first in the olive oil to enhance the flavor. Then I added the green beens and followed the rest of the recipe. - 11/28/08

    My grandmother made this often, when we were children...she served it over long grain rice with orzo...it tastes just as good when served over brown rice - 2/3/09

    In a hurry....take 1 can of green beans, drained....
    1 can of mushroom pieces, drained....
    1 can of diced tomatoes, juice and all.... put in pan and cook till hot or microwave 4 mins....can add some thin sliced onion. Talk about a yummy way to have vegies.

    These are awesome. Make sure to cook the veggies the length of time advised so the flavors will blend nicely. We didn't have any arabic bread on hand but we did have some french. Very good! - 9/14/08

    I make a Greek version. Add onions and oregano, sometimes a little mint. I don't cook it nearly this long, but I usually use frozen green beans and canned tomatoes. I guess it might take longer with fresh. - 6/14/09

    I love a saute in a similar way many greens with garlic and onions instead of tomatoes.The difference is I cook the green beans and then sauté them is easier. - 6/14/09

    I used fresh green beans and tomatoes from the garden and this was very good, although I felt a tad overcooked. I think next time I will reduce the cooking time by 10-15 minutes. I added some oregano and thyme then mixed with orzo and fat free feta for a Greek inspired meal. Yum! - 8/17/10

    I have been making this for years but always used canned green beans and tomatoes. I saute the garlic a couple of minutes and add the beans and tomatoes and simmer about 10 minutes. Fast and delicious. - 8/16/10

    The arabic bread's name is "Pita" bread. I eat these beans with Quinoa instead of rice; plus, Quinoa is more nutritious than Pita which is only white flour, salt and water. You might want zest up your beans with a bit of lemon. Really yummy. - 8/15/11

    Recipe looks/sounds good - BUT 30 minutes on high heat sounds like a long time - is this correct or a typo? Please get back to me - as I'd like to try it - most likely w/ half the olive oil - good or not it's a fat. - 11/28/08

    From the instructions it takes 1hr to cook. and my green beans were starting to look crispy?? Not sure if that is the way it was suppose to be? Was i suppose to add and spices/sesonings? - 11/19/08

  • I use different ingredients to prepare this same receipe ...baby whole okra, zucchini, peas, etc. If you like meat, you can saute some chile cut style meat before adding the other ingredients. Enjoy over rice, or with wheat pita bread, etc. - 7/22/12

  • I've done green beans with tomato and garlic many times, but I never would have thought to give such long cooking. I'll bear this in mind for sometime when I need a veg that's completely different from what we usually have.

  • Very easy to do. I soaked the beans, then sauted with the oil and jarred garlic. I used canned tomatoes. The Greek Version, Fasoulakia, calls for Cumin. So I added that to mine.

  • Fantastic. I used 2.5 cups of Tomatos and there were plenty. Next time I make it I wouldn't cook the tomatoes as long as recommended in this recipe, they got a little mushy. - 3/3/11

  • I've cooked this recipe 5 or 6 times now and have found it easier and just as nice to combine everything at the beginning, pop on a lid and let it simmer for 45 mins. To cut calories I don't put in the oil but I do add extra garlic. - 1/14/11

  • I used young beans from the garden and they got very close to charcoal - I cut the cooking time. I think more mature beans would take 30 mins. DH loved them. A nice change from the other ways we've been using to deal with a bountiful harvest. I put in 1/2 bulb of garlic <VBG>. - 8/16/10

  • I love green beans fresh, frozen, or canned. And I've made something very much like this, with the little grape/cherry tomatoes, and brown in some pine nuts (or pinon nuts). This also works well with almonds or macadamia nuts. I want some NOW!! (but I think I'm already out of beans!). - 8/16/10
