Number of Servings: 6
2 cups elbow macaroni 1 cup chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 16 oz 93% lean ground beef 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, low fat 1 can diced tomatoes
1 tbsp oregano 1 tbsp basil 1 tbsp ground cumin salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350*F. Cook macaroni according to package and drain. In a skillet, saute onions and peppers until soft. Remove and set aside. Brown hamburger and drain. Add onions, peppers, meat, tomatoes, oregano, basil, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix together. Add mixture to macaroni and pour in a baking dish coated with cooking spray. Heat in oven for 5 minutes. Add cheese to the top and bake until cheese melts and dish is bubbly. Let set for about 5 minutes before cutting.
Oh WOW! I too added the cream of mushroom soup and about 1/3 a can of water. I also seasoned my meat with Weber Gourmet Burger seasoning and it was awesome! Thanks so much for a great recipe! My family loved it!!
I simply love this meal. I had to mix the cheese in through. The 1st time I made it I baked it on top and it was way too dry. I also kept in the tomato sauce with my no salt added tomatoes. Just amazing! A family favorite. Also it fed 8 people so less calories than you think.
I really enjoyed this receipe I did make some changes . First I didn't bake it, my baking dish broke so I did a big one-pot type deal after I cooked my meat. I left out the pepper(forgot to buy), added 98% fat free cream of mush soup and added garlic. The tomatoes came with chilies. Very yummy!
I made this today and I to made a few changes just like the others did. I cooked the green pepper & onion with the meat. I added cream of mushroom soup and I didn't have any orgeano so I used thyme instead. And combined a bunch of cheese with it and put some on the top. And that really did the trick
Everyone loved this, including my picky 17 and twin 11 yr olds - they wanted more! I ate this w/out the noodles and am glad I put some away to have as a leftover! My fav. so far! However I did use reg. shredded cheeses and we have beefalo instead of reg hamburger.
This was very good and it made enough for my family to have it for two nights. I made a couple of changes, as suggested in other posts. I added 1 15oz can of tomato sauce, fresh oregano, thyme and basil and a whole green pepper. I only added 1 1/2 tsp of cumin and made it all in one pot,
Extremely delicious - it was very hard to stop at just one serving!! I added 1 can of 97% fat free cream of mushroom soup to the browned meat before adding in all the remaining ingredients, and only used 1C of cooked macaroni. We had leftovers the next day which were even more delicious. Thanks!!
I threw this recipe into a "recipe analyzer" on another site. It says that for 6 servings, they would be 170 grams each, but that they would carry 426 calories per serving. Not sure why there would be such a difference...
I added the cream of mushroom soup as others recommended. I also didn't bother putting it in the oven, I just added it all together in the skillet. It was absolutely amazing! My husband and my 5 yr old both loved it.
Waaaay good. I used cream of chicken soup as I was out of cream of mushroom and it was yummy. I used less pasta and beef as the portions I had a bit smaller, thus reducing the calorie count. YAY And this still made more than 6 servings. I brought some for lunch and froze the rest.
This was so good! We have been focused on a lower amount of carbs so it was great to find a recipe that was heavy with protein and low on carbs but tasted amazing! I left out the green pepper and cumin w/o losing flavor. Thanks!
When I made this it was VERY dry - until I realized I'd left the tomatoes out because DH doesn't like them. The seasonings were way too strong. I am going to try it again, adding a can of soup and lowering the amount of seasoning.
This was a especially a hit with my daughter who had two servings and declared that it was really yummy. I subbed ground turkey (93% lean) and added in a can of cream of chicken soup. When I plug this into the recipe calculator using my changes I came up with 368 calories per serving-not 290.
Hubby couldn't stop eating it. WIll replace hamburger helper in our house. Used one can cream of mushroom, and ground turkey- mixed together. ALso mixed some cheese in with mixture before putting some on top.
This recipe is great! We had it last night, and my son didn't want to eat it at first, but he ended up cleaning his plate! We had leftovers, and this morning, he asked if he could eat leftovers for lunch today! I added about 1 cup spaghetti sauce, used less basil and oregano, and used mozzarella.
I used 1 cup dry mac. I browned the beef with the pepper, onions and seasonings. I added everything to the pot after draining the noodles (including the cheese) and served after it was all heated. YUMMY!!!
Very good! I was looking for a recipe that was easy to make and used ingredients that I had on hand. I used the suggestion to add mushroom soup and went a bit lighter on the spices since my DH likes his food a bit plainer.
Really dry. Made alot. When warmed it for leftovers we put a 1/4 cp salsa per serving in before heating it. Don't like oregano or cumin, so added other spices, but still too much basil, maybe amount is for fresh rather than dry? Mix cheese in too. Needs sauce.
This was drier than I thought it would be, but it had an excellent flavor. I think next time I would stir the cheese into the mixture for baking, rather than just on top. Very yummy and easy to make.
It was really good! I also substituted veggie crumbles, and I added some fresh garlic to the mix. Also added an 8 oz can of tomato sauce to combat any dryness. Delicious and satisfying. Thanks.
Sounds good - I recalculated it using veggie crumbles, though, since I am a vegetarian. I also think less cheese would be better. Both these things reduce the calories quite a bit, especially if you increase the number served to 8.
This sounds very similar to a recipe I've had for years...but haven't made lately...we will definitely have to give it a try...especially since there is enough to have leftovers for another meal.
I make something similar to this with out the spices.. just usually garlic salt and pepper to taste and i add in tomato sauce. just a one pot meal.. my husband loves it we just call it hamburger goulash.
Very good! Definetly made more than I thought, may have needed some more liquids maybe use stewed tomatoes instead of the diced. Definitely will make again. My family loved it and even took some to work the next day for lunch. Excellent Recipe!
I'll never make hamburger helper ever again! My family loved it and it's quick and easy to make. As soon as the pasta was ready and everything mixed I just popped it in the oven long enough for the cheese to melt. It was very moist and tasty! I used crushed tomatoes and whole wheat pasta!
