Thanksgiving Smoothie (Cranberry-Orange)

Submitted by: MIZZEM

Introduction

Created for a Thanksgiving when I could not eat solid food, but wanted some of those familiar flavors. Since a turkey smoothie is not really all that appealing, and I didn't want pumpkin, the cranberry sauce was the go-to flavor. (I haven't liked the "pecan pie" smoothies I've tried so far, maybe I'll work on that one for the next holiday season.) Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

1 cup canned jellied cranberry sauce (1 8-oz. can)
    1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt
    1 Tbsp real maple syrup
    1 Tbsp orange juice concentrate
1 scoop Sun Warrior Warrior Blend vanilla protein powder
    1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
    dash salt
    1/8 tsp guar gum powder
    1/8 tsp xanthan gum powder
1 small banana, frozen, broken into pieces
    6 ice cubes

Tips

Some blenders want the ice and frozen ingredients first; if so, reverse the order of ingredients. My Hamilton Beach chokes up if I put ice in first.

If you're watching carbs, substitute 1/2 tsp orange extract for the orange juice concentrate and 1 Tbsp sugar-free maple-flavored pancake syrup (it is not "maple syrup" unless it comes from a maple tree!!), and substitute "diet" cranberry juice for the cranberry sauce. The smoothie will be a bit thinner.

If you don't have the guar gum and xanthan gum powders (which I suggest buying in small quantities from the bulk jars at a health food store), don't sweat it. The smoothie won't be as stable and it will be a bit more "icy", but it'll still taste good.

Directions

Blenderize 1st 5 wet ingredients until smooth. Add dry ingredients, blend (scraping sides as needed). Add banana and blend. Add ice cubes 2-3 at a time; may need more or less to get the texture you want.

Serving Size: makes 4 approximately-8-oz. servings
