Slow Cooker Apple Sauce
Submitted by: KARYNWHOIntroduction
A simple and tasty unsweetened apple sauce that you make in the slow cooker. The grocery store near us sells bundles of 6-8 slightly bruised apples for a dollar, so we buy them and immediately turn them into apple sauce. Ingredients
-
About 18 apples, assorted varieties
Juice of half a lemon
3 cinnamon sticks
Tips
Some recipes call for added sugar, but I find that the sauce is still quite sweet without adding any sugar at all -- however, if you plan to "can" or preserve your apple sauce instead of storing it in the fridge and consuming it within a week or so, a little sugar may be helpful as a preservative.
Directions
Peel and core apples, slice in quarters or smaller.
Add cinnamon sticks, apples and lemon juice to a large (7 quart) slow cooker.
Cook on "low" for 6 hours.
Remove cinnamon sticks.
Lightly mash cooked apples in slow cooker with a potato masher.
Allow apple sauce to cool (it will thicken a bit).
Serving Size: 3 Quarts; 12 1-cup servings
