Survival Biscuits - aka Hardtack

Submitted by: JONNIECAROL

Introduction

These are survival biscuits. It's a modified recipe because I wanted something with a little bit of taste to it, and more than just carbs and a tiny bit of protein. These fit the bill. These are survival biscuits. It's a modified recipe because I wanted something with a little bit of taste to it, and more than just carbs and a tiny bit of protein. These fit the bill.
Number of Servings: 16

Ingredients

    2 tsp salt
    1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 lb bacon after cooked and crumbled
    1/2 cup unflavored powdered protein
    2-1/2 tablespoons baking soda
    2-1/2 cups buttermilk
    2 cups old fashioned oatmeal
    3-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
    1/2 cup ground flax seed

Mix the dry ingredients. Slowly add coconut oil and mix together by hand until flour mixture has a crumb texture. Add buttermilk and knead until able to form solid ball of dough. Roll out to about ½ to ¾ inch thick on floured board. Cut into squares or rounds and use a fork to make multiple air vents on both sides.

Tips

May be dunked in warm milk or coffee, or even pan fried in butter or eaten as is (texture of dog biscuit! lol). These will keep for longer than your lifetime if placed in water/airtight container! If it's really a survival situation, be sure to have a good bioavailable multivitamin in your bug out bag.

Directions

Bake in the oven at 325 for about 20 minutes. Turn and allow to finish baking another 20 minutes. Store in dry place on rack until completely free of moisture (2-3 days in oven works well). Then seal in air-tight ziplocks until needed.

Serving Size: Makes 16 2x3" rectangular biscuits
