Bread Tart
Submitted by: PHANTOMPOEIntroduction
This is intended to be a low-to-no refined sugar recipe; it's not very sweet as a result, and is best served with coffee as a tea-time or morning snack, as opposed to a focused dessert. It has a bready, nutty flavor. Ingredients
-
1 cup flour
1/2 stick butter
pinch salt
1 tbs flax seed
5 tbsp or so ice-cold water
4 oz whole wheat bread crumbs
1 oz almonds
4 dates
2 tbsp honey
6 tbsp jam (pear recommended)
1/2 tsp minced, fresh ginger (or a pinch of ground/dried)
Tips
Serve with cream or icecream, or drizzle with honey if served for dessert. Coffee is good with this as it is not too sweet.
Directions
Crust: Pulse flour, salt, flax seed and salt in a food processor, until it holds together lightly. Place in a bowl, and mix with water 1 tbsp at a time until dough just holds together. Let rest 5 minutes, then roll out.
Bake crust at 350 in a tart pan (weighted down) for 15 minutes.
Pulse almonds and dates together in a food processor until the almonds are chopped; add the bread crumbs (I usually just put a few slices of bread in the food processor first, and set crumbs aside until this stage), honey, jam, and ginger, and pulse until everything is well-combined and holds together when pressed.
Once the crush cools, press the filling mixture into the crust, and bake for 30 minutes at 325 - just to set everything and warm it through.
Serving Size: Makes 8 slices
Number of Servings: 8
