Ingredients

396g of hard tofu (I use Cauldron)
    1 small egg
    1 medium onion
1/4 tsp of Chinese 5 spice powder
    1/4 tsp ground ginger
    1/4 tsp garlic salt
    1/4 tsp celery salt.
1/4 tsp vegetable bullion (Knorr vegetable stock)
    1 1/2 tsp corn flour
    Salt and pepper to taste
    1tbs fried shallots (ground)
    1tbsp fine breadcrumbs (optional)
    Oil to fry

Tips

This is a great recipe for snacks or for birthday parties or picnics. It is also added into a curry or kurma in place of meat as a vegetarian option.
Note the longer you stand the tofu the less water it will have so it is easier to handle when rolling into balls.

Directions

Stand the hard tofu for 20 minutes draining on a clean tea towel.
Prepare ingredients grate onions. Mash the drained tofu like mashing potatoes.
In a large bowl mix all ingredients together to form a dough like consistency.
This mixture will be easy to handle so make little balls approximately 1 inch in diameter.
At this stage you can coat each mini ball in the bread crumbs to help the, hold shape.
Heat oil to fry or pop into a deep fat fryer for about 1-2 mins constantly moving them about to get a nice golden colour.
Drain well and serve as is or with a sauce of your preference. Can be eaten hot or cold.
