Ingredients

    Bread:
    1 C. Whole Milk
    0.5 C. Granulated Sugar
    0.5 C. butter
2-pkg. Dry Yeast dissolved in 1/4 C. 105 degree Water
    4-C. All Purpose Flour
    1 Large Egg
    0.5 tsp. Salt
    1 tsp. Cinnamon

    Filling:
    1 C. Brown Sugar
    1 C. Granulated Sugar
    0.5 C. Butter
12 Maraschino Cherries (6 chopped in each ring)

    Egg Glaze:
    1 Egg
    1 tsp. Cream

    Optional:
Turbinado Sugar sprinkled on top before baking

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Directions

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Warm milk on medium heat until heated through (not boiling). Mix in butter and granulated sugar until melted. Move to mixing bowl. Add yeast (it should be foamy otherwise its dead and you need to try again.) Add egg, salt, cinnamon. Use a Kitchenaid mixer with a dough hook, since it will save a lot of time. Put mixer on level 2. Gradually add flour one cup at a time as the mixer is mixing the dough. Knead the dough in the mixer for 7 minutes. You may need to add more flour until it breaks away from the bowl.

Oil a separate bowl (nonstick spray, a little Crisco, whatever.) Place dough in the oiled bowl and place a clean towel over it. Let it sit for 1 hour.

The dough should rise in that hour. Punch down dough and separate into two balls of dough. Roll dough into rectangular shape about 1/2 inch thick. Melt butter and brush on dough.

Filling:
Chop up butter into small pieces. Add walnuts, granulated sugar and brown sugar. With a pastry blender, chop up and blend these ingredients. They should look like well mixed crumbles.

Spread a thin layer of filling over the dough. Chop up maraschino cherries and place in a line down the center. Start at the bottom and roll the dough into a tube shape. Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick spray. Arrange the tube dough into a ring and pinch the ends together.

Brush ring with Egg Glaze and make 1 inch slices along the outside edge (do not slice all the way through. the inner ring edge should be uncut - see photo).

Serving Size: 1 slice is a serving. This recipe makes two ring cakes

Number of Servings: 60
