My HomeMade Bread

Ingredients

    9 cups flour
    1 cup milk
    4 tsp salt
    3 cups warm water
    6 tbs sugar
    6 tbs butter Crisco
    4 1/2 tsp salt

Directions

Makes 236 - 1 oz servings.
Scald milk, stir in 4 tbs. sugar, salt and Crisco. Add 2 tbs sugar to warm water and sprinkle yeast over top and stir with a warm spoon . Proof about 10 mins. Add lukewarm milk mixture and half of flour. Beat until smooth. Turn onto floured surface and knead until smooth and feels just right. let rest about 10 minutes. grease bowl, place doug in bowl and grease top of dough. Cover, rise until doubled-about an hour. Punch down and let rest about 15 mins. Divide into 4 loaf pans. cover and let rise until doubled. After about 45 mins, turn oven on to 400 degrees to preheat. Let bread rise about 15 mins. more. Bake for 30 minutes.

  • I would use some whole wheat flour and sub the sugar for splenda. I am going to try this recipe today. I figured out that the last entry for 4 1/2 tsp salt must be for the yeast or the first 4 tsp salt must have been for the yeast. I will figure out the measurement for the yeast. No problem. - 5/26/08
