Good trail mix guidelines, plenty of room for variety. My first batch has Life cereal, unsalted sunflower seeds, butterscotch chips, and a combo of mixed dried fruit and raisins. Yummy! Next time I'm going for Bran Chex - good way to sneak fiber into my diet. - 5/23/08

This recipe is great! I love all the variety it has. I immediately put mine in single portion Ziploc baggies. (60 for $1 at Target dollar spot) That way when I reach for it I don't worry about eating to much. - 8/21/09

Calories high? Yep. Fat content high? Uh huh. BUT...
The foods in this recipe are good for you, and sometimes, even while watching your weight, you have to eat healthy food that does have fat and calories. As spark says, moderation is the key. - 3/24/09

this is really a great idea. But can you stop at a quarter cup???? I mean it is 345 calories in 1/4 cup! MERCY! - 9/25/08

I could not trust myself with a whole batch so.....using the nutrition labels on the products, I came up with this 1 serving recipe and fewer calories: 2T raisins, 54 calories; 1/4 C Cheerios, 25 cal; 1/2 oz. mixed nuts, 85 cal.; 1 T Hershey's semi sweet chocolate pieces, 70 calories; 234 calories. - 2/10/10

Great recipe! To check which ingredients were used for the Nutritional Info, click on "Ingredients Detalis" just below the Nutritional Info. In this case, Bran Chex, raisins, sunflower seeds, and soybeans were used. - 9/25/08

I made up a batch similar to this to take on the train with me as a good snack or even a meal substitute if necessary; it had fruit and protein. I just had to be careful about portions (it is easy to eat too much in one sitting). I am concerned that the dried fruits have so much sugar added. - 9/11/08

Trail Mix is supposed to be high in calories, it's original purpose was to be a lightweight snack when hiking. This is a lower fat version of the normal trail mix of nuts, candy and dried fruit. - 11/11/09

Taste great and has a lot of fiber, BUT how this could possibly be claimed as healthy is rediculous because ONLY ONE SERVING has 345.3 calories, 13.6 total fat, and 49.7 carbs! - 8/22/09

I love trail mix~thank you for all the ideas for variety!
KDA1981~you can do the research on your own and see this is calculated correcty as it is. A whole cup is 1,409. Divide that by 4 and it's 352.25 calories. So the poster DID calculate it corectly.
Yummy mixed with yogurt too! =) - 9/25/08

Good ideas. I made this last night, using almonds, Corn Chex, dried apricots (cut into quarters), and Peanut Butter M&Ms. By today, the Chex were stale from the moisture in the apricots, and the almonds nearly were, too. I may not cut the apricots up in the future I like all the different ideas! - 4/10/09

This sounds great, but IF you use STORE- Bought dried fruit, watch out because they almost always have added sugar (which isn't really necessary). You' d be better off to make your own dried fruit and stay away from the added sugar! - 6/14/08

If you look at the calorie breakdown by ingredient it turns out a serving size is 3/4 cup, not 1/4 cup, so divide by three to get the real calorie count!

I made this with a wide variety of cereal, dried fruits, nut and butterscotch chips and it came out to 127 calories per 1/4 cup. - 1/11/10

I don't know why this is so high in calories, except maybe for the dried fruit (which has a LOT of sugar). I make up my own snack mix ...3 cups of original Chex mix w/ 3 cups of Joe's O's (cheerios equivalent from Trader Joe's) w/ 3 cups of puffed brown rice cereal. Mix it up in a large ziploc. - 8/22/09

Too high in fat & calories for 1/4 cup IMO. I would definitely want more. This could be a trigger food for many people. It is for me. - 8/21/09

Something crunchy for when you want something to munch on. Most ingredients are nutritious and will satisfy both the salty and sweet tooth. Easy to make as usually have ingredients on hand. - 3/23/08

Lots of variations. Less expensive when you can find some of the ingredients on sale or w/coupons...then mix what you get. Pretty good mixed with a little n/fat yogurt too. - 3/9/08

I loved this recipe because it gives you a great list of different things and I even have some of these on hand to start with. For my first try I mixed cheerios, raisins, butterscotch chips and sunflower nuts. Yum! - 3/31/08
