Good trail mix guidelines, plenty of room for variety. My first batch has Life cereal, unsalted sunflower seeds, butterscotch chips, and a combo of mixed dried fruit and raisins. Yummy! Next time I'm going for Bran Chex - good way to sneak fiber into my diet. - 5/23/08

This recipe is great! I love all the variety it has. I immediately put mine in single portion Ziploc baggies. (60 for $1 at Target dollar spot) That way when I reach for it I don't worry about eating to much. - 8/21/09

Calories high? Yep. Fat content high? Uh huh. BUT...
The foods in this recipe are good for you, and sometimes, even while watching your weight, you have to eat healthy food that does have fat and calories. As spark says, moderation is the key. - 3/24/09

I could not trust myself with a whole batch so.....using the nutrition labels on the products, I came up with this 1 serving recipe and fewer calories: 2T raisins, 54 calories; 1/4 C Cheerios, 25 cal; 1/2 oz. mixed nuts, 85 cal.; 1 T Hershey's semi sweet chocolate pieces, 70 calories; 234 calories. - 2/10/10

I made up a batch similar to this to take on the train with me as a good snack or even a meal substitute if necessary; it had fruit and protein. I just had to be careful about portions (it is easy to eat too much in one sitting). I am concerned that the dried fruits have so much sugar added. - 9/11/08

Trail Mix is supposed to be high in calories, it's original purpose was to be a lightweight snack when hiking. This is a lower fat version of the normal trail mix of nuts, candy and dried fruit. - 11/11/09

I love trail mix~thank you for all the ideas for variety!
KDA1981~you can do the research on your own and see this is calculated correcty as it is. A whole cup is 1,409. Divide that by 4 and it's 352.25 calories. So the poster DID calculate it corectly.
Yummy mixed with yogurt too! =) - 9/25/08

If you look at the calorie breakdown by ingredient it turns out a serving size is 3/4 cup, not 1/4 cup, so divide by three to get the real calorie count!

I made this with a wide variety of cereal, dried fruits, nut and butterscotch chips and it came out to 127 calories per 1/4 cup. - 1/11/10

Good ideas. I made this last night, using almonds, Corn Chex, dried apricots (cut into quarters), and Peanut Butter M&Ms. By today, the Chex were stale from the moisture in the apricots, and the almonds nearly were, too. I may not cut the apricots up in the future I like all the different ideas! - 4/10/09

This sounds great, but IF you use STORE- Bought dried fruit, watch out because they almost always have added sugar (which isn't really necessary). You' d be better off to make your own dried fruit and stay away from the added sugar! - 6/14/08

I don't know why this is so high in calories, except maybe for the dried fruit (which has a LOT of sugar). I make up my own snack mix ...3 cups of original Chex mix w/ 3 cups of Joe's O's (cheerios equivalent from Trader Joe's) w/ 3 cups of puffed brown rice cereal. Mix it up in a large ziploc. - 8/22/09

Very close to the recipe I use now for trail mix - except I haven't used cereal yet - just dried fruit, nuts, seeds and sometimes mini M&M's. We take it to the cross country mountain bike races that my son does (and he hopes I will be doing soon as well) - great snack for those active atheletes !! - 2/26/10

Great idea! The good news is that the nutritional info is for 3 servings, not 1. If you look at the breakdown per ingredient, there's 3/4 cup of stuff (1/4 C. raisins, 1/4 C. cereal, 1/8 C. sunflower seeds, 1/8 C. soybeans.) Now I can relax & enjoy this healthy treat with a little less guilt! - 11/11/09

Well, thinking about it, it really depends on which ingredients you put in it, and there are tons of combos, so it's really difficult to get the calorie amount accurate when you have all those different options. I guess just pick and choose the lower cal options and you can get less than 340. - 9/25/08

For all those who are complaining about the high calorie content: Yes, it is high in calories. Yes, the fat content is high. But that's because of the nuts, which contain HEALTHY fats. A little goes a long way with almost all trail mixes. - 3/2/10

My son is a cub scout. I love the trail mix they sell but it is high in calories. I used the same idea and came up with cheerios, dried cranberries, unsalted sunflower seeds, and pretzels. Many dried fruits add no sugar. Others add no sulfur to preserve color either. For best nutritional value, choose dried fruit that is only fruit. Brazil nuts and almonds are supposed to be healthier than most other nuts. Read cereal labels for added sugar also. There are a few good choices. - 11/11/09

I love trail mix, but here is the problem I have with it: serving size = 1/4 cup! Egad, if it is tasty there is no way I'm going to limit myself to 1/4 cup, but more than that is prohibitive in calories. So I regretfully have to put it on my list of foods to avoid. Like french fries. - 11/11/09
