Ingredients

    1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    4 egg whites
    1 cup sugar
    1/4 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
    1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional)
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (semi-sweet)
    Butter-flavored cooking spray

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8×8 inch non-stick cake pan with spray.

In a medium mixing bowl, using a sturdy whisk or spatula, mix the applesauce, vanilla, egg whites and sugar until they are well combined.

Add the flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir the mixture until it is just combined and no lumps remain. Pour it into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the chips evenly over the top. Bake the brownies for 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out dry (a few crumbs are okay).

Transfer the pan to a cooling rack and allow them to cool 5 minutes. Cut into 12 equal brownies. Makes 12 (1 brownie) servings.

Note: Espresso powder adds NO coffee flavor to the brownies

I used two whole eggs instead off egg whites. I used a little less than 1/2 tsp of instant coffee and baked 22 mins. They came out perfect. Very chocolately and fudgy in texture. - 10/9/09

So good! If you leave out the chocolate chips, the calories do go down to 89 calories per serving based on 12 servings per batch. You won't even miss the chips, these are so gooey and chocolatey on their own that one will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth! - 9/16/08

I have tried EVERY diet brownie recipe there is (black bean, pumpkin & box mix, etc.) and this one is by far the BEST! These taste wonderful and you get a decent sized piece, so rich that one will do. YUMMMMM! - 6/26/08

YUM! I used Truvia for half the sugar and pumpkin puree instead of the applesauce. I also omitted the choc chips - didn't feel they were needed and they are plenty chocolatey and rich. Next time will replace all the sugar with Truvia. Right now-they came to 59 cals each. Thanks for the recipe! - 11/17/08

Fantastic! I used Splenda Baking Blends instead of sugar (1/2 cup) and left out the espresso... for an extra special treat, use Andes choc mint bits instead of choc chips on top (same calories!). For extra smooth brownies, add 1 Tbsp unwhipped whipping cream. (87 calories per brownie!!) - 10/24/08

First time I made them, I used Splenda, but followed the rest of the recipe. They were dry and very bitter. I tried again using sugar, 1/2 the cocoa, and more applesauce, and they are delicious! Hard to believe they are so lo cal! - 7/15/08

These were great and will make again for sure. I used half sugar and half splenda. I also placed a 8- half tbsp's of red. fat pb on batter in pan, then sprinkled w/ chips. The brownies were very moist and chocolatey. Did not taste chalky or low cal, low fat. I also used whole wheat flour. Delicious - 6/24/09

  • I had high hopes for these guys because of the overall rating. I feel like it's lacking something, but I can't out my finger on it.....maybe it's ingredients that are bad for you ;) Oh well, I'm new to this healthy eating. I will eat them, but I'm not sure I will make again - 10/9/13

  • I liked that they had a nice brownie-like texture, but I used Special Dark unsweetened cocoa powder and I think that might have been why they didn't seem very fudgy or chocolatey to me. I'll try them again with regular unsweetened cocoa powder and see if they turn out better for me. - 2/8/13

  • They did these same brownies on Dr Drew today but used the 24 mini muffin tin instead, so you ended up getting 48 little brownies and they were like 109 cal for 2. I'm going to make them that way, and see how they come out and then I don't have to worry how big I cut them either. - 8/28/12

  • 5 out of 5! My kids 13, 11 and 4 and I loved these brownies. I used 2 eggs like Beverly did and used cinnamon flavored applesauce & I added 1/4 cup of crushed flaxseeds! Awesome brownies will definitely make over and over! - 7/22/12

  • These were delicious! So fudgy just like a good brownie should be! Nobody new they were low calorie either. I didn't use the espresso powder, chocolate chips or salt and they turned out beautiful, thankyou so much for sharing this recipe! I added in some nuts for extra crunch!

  • Tastes great! Wouldn't think it was diet!I made it using half splenda and didn't add choco chips- didn't miss it at all!I did however make 9 servings from the batch instead of 12- made brownies 77 calories each and a nicer portion size. Brownie was very cake-like. - 6/27/12

  • This was very good, and I didn't add the chocolate chips. This was my first time using applesauce in a recipe, and it was a great success! Next time I make this I will use less sugar, and less cocoa powder - it was just a little too sweet for me. But awesome Brownie, you can't even tell its low cal! - 9/17/11

  • Awesome!! My usual brownies are 3 times this in calories and fat. I was desperate to find a recipe that I could still eat. My husband is the brownie taster & he says only make these from now on!! That says it all!! Especially since I have been making scratch brownies for 30 years!! - 6/26/11

  • This was awesome - I used sunflower oil instead of applesauce (mine had gone bad) - found I had to bake them longer - closer to 30 minutes but that might be because of the oil - very well received!! Will definitely make again!! - 3/13/11

  • I loved the way these tasted. My usual brownies are really close in all the nutritional values except these use the applesauce instead of oil so I really liked that about these and the chocolate flavor is FANTASTIC! I added 1/4 pecans. - 2/16/11

  • Interesting. When I first made them they were awsesome, right out of the oven. However, I stored them overnight and brought them to a party the next night and they were extremely crumbly and dry. It was an incredibly strange texture. Maybe I did something wrong? - 2/5/11

  • I was a bit skeptical that these would be good with applesauce as the cakes I have tried in the past that used applesauce were not good but these were AMAZING!! My kids even loved them..even my husband loved him and he hates all things low calorie.. - 2/4/11

  • These things are wonderful!!!! The chocolate chips on the top are soooo good. I doubled the recipe so I could make a batch to take to a pitch in. I know everyone will enjoy these. My grandma did not believe me when I said they were low fat and only 113 calories. - 1/28/11

  • WoWEE! This turned my 9-year-old into a brownie wolf! I like semi-sweet chocolate; even with just a few shavings of it atop the batter, instead of the chips, these were moist and full-flavored. I used 3/4c.Sugar; more'd likely make 'em more tender & cakelike. Txture was fudgy, satisfying to bite. - 1/26/11

The only things I did different to this recipe was use eggbeaters and 1/2 cup Splenda. I cooked them for 20 min. and they were dry and tasted like a 90% cocoa chocolate bar. It was Nasty. So disappointing, I wanted some yummy brownies so bad right now. - 1/10/11

  • This is a good recipe to keep around! The texture is definitely different, due to all the egg whites and a low amount of flour, but it's not a bad texture. I left out the chocolate chips. 1/2tsp is a lot of salt though, and I could taste it, so I'll probably do 1/4 tsp next time - 8/23/10
