Grilled Mediteranean Ahi Tuna

Introduction

Ahi Tuna (Yellowfin) Steaks Grilled with a Mediterranean Flair. Yellowfin Tuna or Ahi Tuna is usually served either Raw, as in sushi or Seared. or Grilled. When I first had this tuna grilled in spain with olive oil and salt I couldn't believe it was fish at all. This recipe is a bit of a cross between seared italian style and Spanish grilled. Ingredients

4 5oz Uncooked Fresh or Frozen ( thawed) Ahi Tuna Steaks 1 inch thick

1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    1/2 tsp Salt - Kosher
Lemon Juice from 1 wedge of lemon 1/2 tsp
1/4 tsp Cracked black pepper freshly ground
1/2 tsp finely chopped oregano or 1/4 tsp dried
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes or dash crushed dried
1 tsp finely chopped basil or 1/4 tsp dried
    Garlic, 1 clove minced fine

Directions

1) Preheat Outside Grill on Medium High setting when you start your prep. Or start your charcoal grill about 30 minutes before you plan to grill tuna.

2) Pat tuna steaks with paper towels to remove excess moisture then place in a shallow dish.

3) Mix all spices with oil and lemon juice in a small bowl with a fork or wisk. Allow to rest for at least 5 minutes to blend together.

4) Brush mixture on both sides of Tuna steaks and allow steaks to rest for another 5 minutes.

5) Grill steaks on hot grill 2-5 minutes on each side to attain desired doneness. For well done there should still be some pinkness to the center. Most prefer barely warm red centers. Be Brave, you will be surprised at the flavorful moistness and un-fishyness of this Tuna!

Overcooking to a uniform color would be a sad waste of a great dish!

Delicious! I cooked it exactly 2 minutes on a panini grill set to high. It was absolutely perfect with a cool red center. I think the secret is bringing the tuna to room temperature just before you put it on the grill. I served this with a side of brown & wild rice and fresh pico de gallo. - 8/26/09

I used the dried herbs and cooked this on a hot skillet in the kitchen. Hubby told me to add it to our regular meals. Yummy! I look forward to when my herbs are growing so I can make it with fresh herbs. - 4/13/10

Both of my children, who hate pretty much all things protein (chicken, pork, beef, fish,) actually liked this. My younger daughter even asked for more! My husband may just be a fish convert(finally)! My only advice is to cook the fish 2 minutes on each side, which is plenty for tuna.. 3 minutes max. - 7/11/09

  • Just tried it out. substituted a fresh serrano pepper for the dried. It was quite good. While you're at the grill, throw on some seasoned yellow squash and broccolini and you've got the whole meal in about 20 minutes. - 7/9/12

  • My wife bought ahi tuna for dad's day, but I haven't cooked it on the grill previously. I didn't like the recipes in our cookbooks, so I thought I'd check out what's on the internet. Found your site and this recipe and wow! What a winner! Even my 15 y/o son loved it. Thanks. - 6/18/12
