I use low sodium tomatoes and sauce and I do not add the salt. This drops the sodium level down.

Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

    Crisco Pure Vegetable Oil, 4 tbsp
    Flour, all-purpose, 3 tbsp
    Onions, 1/3 cup, chopped
    Green Peppers, 1/4 cup, chopped
    Canned Tomatoes, undrained, 1 16 oz. can
    Tomato Sauce, 1 15 oz can
    Lemons, 1 slice
    Brown Sugar, 2 tsp packed
    Chili powder, 1 tsp
    Salt, 1/2 tsp
    Garlic powder, 1/4 tsp
    Pepper, black, 1/4 tsp
    Dried basil leaves, 1/4 tsp
    Thyme, ground, 1/4 tsp
    Bay Leaf, 1
    Pepper, cayenne, 1/8 tsp
    1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

Directions

Heat Crisco in large saucepan. Add flour. Stir until smooth. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, 3 to 4 minutes or until lightly browned. Add onion, celery and green pepper. Cook over moderate heat 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Add remaining ingredients except shrimp. Cover. Reduce heat. Simmer about 45 minutes, or until flavors are blended. Stir in shrimp. Re-cover. Cook about 3 minutes longer or until shrimp are opaque and firm. Remove and discard lemon slice and bay leaf. Serve over rice.
