Chocolate Brownies with Flax Seed

Introduction

I have modified this brownie recipe to reflect a healthier version. These are one of my favorite treats. They are chewy and chocolaty. I have modified this brownie recipe to reflect a healthier version. These are one of my favorite treats. They are chewy and chocolaty.
Number of Servings: 32

Ingredients

    1/2 cup whole wheat flour
    3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    3 - egg whites
    2 - eggs
    1 cup granulated sugar
    2/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
    2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 tablespoons ground flax seed
    2 tablespoons wheat germ

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place parchment paper in bottom of glass 9 x 13 baking dish.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, flax seed, and wheat germ.

In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on low speed, beat the egg whites until foamy. Genhtly stir in the eggs, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well combined. Blend in the applesauce and vanilla extract. Stir in the flour mixture.

Spread into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inhserted in the center comes out clean. Do not overbake. Cool in the pan on a rack. Dust with confectioners' sugar if you like.

Makes 32 brownies.

    Calories per ingredient says brown sugar is .02 cup so I took 32 servings times .02 and got .64 cup or ~ 2/3 cup. Anyone else have a different idea?

  • There is No specific amount of brown sugar, but then the directions state combine granulated sugar and brown sugar. Has anyone made these brownies? - 6/10/10
