Introduction

This is pretty much a classic. I like to cook it down to a thick stew like consistency...YUMMERS! This is pretty much a classic. I like to cook it down to a thick stew like consistency...YUMMERS!
Number of Servings: 9

Ingredients

    16 oz dried split peas

2 cups diced fully cooked extra lean ham

    1 cup dice carrots

    2 cups diced potato

    3 stalks chopped celery

    1 medium chopped onion

    2 cloves minced garlic

    2 bay leaves

    1/2 tsp. salt

    1/2 tsp. pepper

    1/4 tsp. marjoram

    1 tsp. liquid smoke

    5 cups hot water

Directions

In a crock pot, layer in order, starting peas on the bottom (don't stir for the first few hours).

Cover and cook on high.

Remove bay leaves before serving.

If you like a thinner soup it is ready in about 4 to 5 hours. I like it much thicker so I turn it down to low and let it cook another 4 to 5 hours. The serving size is based on this thicker portion.

Also great for freezing and using later.

Makes 9, one cup servings this way.

  • All I can say is YUM! So simple. I cooked on low for 8 hours. Left out potatoes & celery as I didn't have them on hand . One cup ham. No marjarom. Added two more cups of water mid cooking. Delicious! Garlic powder instead of cloves. A little cayenne too. - 12/11/10
