Yummy sweet-ish baked South African meat dish. I got this recipe from Real magazine. Yummy sweet-ish baked South African meat dish. I got this recipe from Real magazine.
Number of Servings: 6

    500 grams lean ground beef
    1 small onion, chopped
1 apple, peeled and chopped (Granny Smith are best)
2 slices of white bread soaked in 1/2 cup milk (I used non-fat. Tastes good with white bread - will try next time with multi-grain bread)
    2 tsp curry powder
    2 Tbsp fruit chutney
1/4 c currants (I have substituted raisins, and it tastes good)
    2 Tbsp lemon juice
    salt and pepper
    1 bay or lemon leaves
    1 egg
    1/2c milk (I use nonfat)

Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Grease 4-cup baking/casserole dish.

Brown the beef. Remove to a plate, add onion and fry for 5 mins until soft.

Add chopped apple. Squeeze out excess milk from bread and add to frying pan with browned beef, tearing the bread to mix in with meat.

Add curry powder, chutney, currants and lemon juice. Mix well and season.

Put mixture into baking dish and cook 30 min.

Take out. Mix egg and milk together for topping and pour over meat. Bake a further 15 mins.

Serve wiht rice or couscous and extra chutney.
