Ingredients

    1/4 C warm water
1 C sour cream, non fat
    1 egg
    1/4 C finely chopped onion
    1 T butter, softened
    1 pkg dry yeast (1-1/2 t)
    1 C flour (I use bread flour)
    2 T sugar
    1 T dill weed
    1 T dill seed, optional
    2-1/2 C additional flour

Directions

Combine the first five ingredients using a hand mixer or wooden spoon. Sir in the remaining ingredients (yeast, flour, sugar and dills) by hand. Sir in the additional flour (add slightly more if needed) and knead until smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased bowl, turn dough over one time to grease the top of dough. cover bowl and let rise 1-1/2 hours or until double.
Punch down, divide into 3 sections. Roll each section into 8" ropes on a floured surface. Place ropes together down the center of a breased baking sheet. Braid from center to ends; seal ends. Let rise, covered, 1 hour.
Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes.
NOTE: for a shiny bread surface, brush bread top with egg water (1 beated egg yolk and 2 t water) after the loaf has been shaped.
Serving size: cut into 1" slices. Further, cut the center pieces in half to produce 18-1" thick by 3 " wide pieces.
