Ingredients

    6 Grilled sirloin burger patties
    6 whole wheat pitas, split
6 pineapple slices, canned, reserve juice
    3 cups shredded cabbage
    1 cup onion, sliced
    4 TBS cider vinegar
    1/2 tsp salt
    3 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp black pepper, to taste
    6 tsp soy sauce

Bottled teriyaki barbecue sauce, or make your own:
    1/4 cup reserved pineapple juice
    1/4 cup ketchup
    1 tsp sugar
splash of soy sauce, to taste
dash of tobasco or other hot pepper sauce

Directions

While burgers are cooking, make the slaw: Combine cabbage, onion, vinegar, 3 tsp sugar, salt, and black pepper. Toss to combine, then set aside to marinate while you cook the burgers.

Grill or broil 6 burgers, topping each with a tsp of soy sauce and a tablespoon or so of pineapple sauce while grilling.

if you're making your own barbecue sauce, put it together while the burgers cook: Combine ketchup, pineapple juiice, 1 tsp sugar, splash of soy sauce and dash of hot pepper sauce. Mix well.

Assemble burgers: Cut burger in half, and put one half in each pita half. Add a half of a pineapple slice to each burger half, and stuff the remaining space in the pocket with 1/2 cup or so of slaw--or as much as will fit. Drizzle barbecue sauce over each half, and serve.

Makes12 half or 6 whole burgers. Half is plenty for most people, as it's very filling.
