Baked Spaghetti with Meatballs

Submitted by: MB4841

Introduction

If you like Lasanga, you'll love this dish. And I think it's easier to make! Calories could be cut a little by using 1 % or no fat cottage cheese. But I think it is very satisfying as is.
With baked meatballs the fat and calories are a little less than listed.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef, lean or extra lean
1/3 cup milk, 1% is fine
    1 large egg
1/2 bread crumbs, fresh (or 1 slice of bread)
    3 tbl parmesan cheese
2 cups marinara sauce, a little more if you like
    24 ounces cottage cheese, 2%
    2 ounces parmesan cheese
    4 ounces mozzarella cheese
    8 ounces thin spaghetti
1/2 tsp each oregano, marjaram, thyme

Directions

Mix ground beef, milk, egg, bread crumbs, 3 tablespoons parmesan cheese and herbs (if you wish, salt and pepper to taste). Form meatballs and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or untill they have released some fat.

Meanwihile prepare spaghetti according to package directions. Place baked meatballs in heated marinaa sauce.

Lightly grease a 9 X 13 casserole dish. I used a cast iron pot (approximately 10 to 12 inch diameter), and it worked great .Add spaghetti and top with marinara and meatball sauce. Spread cottage cheese on top. Then top with parmasan and mozzarella. Cover and bake for 50 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Remove cover and bake an additional 10 minutes to brown.

Enjoy.
