I make this recipe using sugar substitute and applesauce instead of the oil. I use regular white vinegar instead of balsamic and whole wheat flour. What I've done to make it an easy-to-eat treat is instead of using a pan, I pour batter into muffin tins for 12 single serving treats. 66 cals each! - 3/18/08

This is a FAB Vegan cake recipe thank you so much for posting.

Oh....I don't know how you managed to get 12 servings out of it though....I got 8!

This is my absolute fave chocolate cake! I'd caution people about using Splenda in this, however - it changes the consistency totally.

Also, I always make it in the pan - just stir the dry ingredients together, make 3 dents, add the liquids, stir, bake. Wonderful! - 3/20/08

I found this on spark people a few years ago and I make it all the time. I always have the ingredients handy and it's my go to cake when I need something for a party. People don't know it's vegan until I tell them. I suggest serving with fresh raspberries or raspberry sauce. - 4/6/09

If you're not used to eating vegan, you may not like this. I made it because I've never had vegan cake before and was interested. It comes out very moist, but a little lacking in flavor. My brother said it tasted like chocolate water. I didn't mind it as much, but would likely not make it again. - 3/22/08

I've made this for years, found it in a Moosewood cookbook, using cold coffee for water. I make a coconut one for someone who can't have chocolate (just sub sweetened coconut cream for oil and sugar & top with shredded coconut). Or shredded carrot, chopped dried fruit and spices to make a spice cake - 3/18/08

This is an old favorite I remember first trying in the sixties :) It's great! Back then, we used white vinegar instead of the balsamic; I'll have to try the latter version. Because it was so unusual, everyone called it "Crazy Cake." - 9/22/09

I make a recipe similar to this all the time. The nice thing about this is that the nutrition facts are already calculated! And, get a grip people, when it says "vegan" in the title anyone with common sense would know that it means there are no animal ingredients in it, hence it is safe for animals. - 3/18/08

This is a great cake. I found this recipe in Wolfgang Puck's rice cooker cookbook. That's right itcan be made in a rice cooker. It cooks out really moist. There is also a chocolate glaze (recipe on HSN.com) that is really good over it--and easy to make. - 4/27/09

I will bookmark this and give it a whirl when I get time.

And yes, just because it doesn't contain animal products does not mean you can give it to animals. Animals eat animal products all the time.

Chocolate is very harmful to dogs and if it has ingested a substantial amount, they can die. - 3/18/08

I thought it was great, especially since most of the people in my home are allergic to all forms of dairy. I don't know why someone thought it was supposed to go in the microwave and it's safe for animals becuase it's vegan. Not to feed to your pets...LOL - 3/18/08

Years ago, a friend's mother gave me that recipe. I used it for years while raising my kids. I tweaked it a little to add more nutrition, but the kids still loved it. I sprinkled a little powdered sugar on top, which made it a little festive. I have also used carob in place of the cocoa. Thank you - 9/22/09
