I usually only remove the stem on ones that have really long ones but only part of the way. Otherwise, I don't bother. I never notice a bitter taste and texture doesn't bother me. Love me some spinach!

I agree with ONE4SUN...closed captioning of these videos would be great! I never de-stem spinach--baby or otherwise--and I've never noticed any bitterness or aftertaste. I guess to each his/her own.

I never remove the stem, if it is long I nip off the end with my fingers. Spinach has become so expensive I will not waste any nutrients because of a bit if texture. Waste not want not. See how many of us leave the stems on.
- 4/29/13
I only eat spinach raw so will only remove the really long stem part. I think removing the entire stem is probably only needed when cooking to help with consistent texture. Think that's what I understood her to say anyway.
- 4/28/13
I learned late in life to rinse/wash many of my use-only freggies to keep ingredients fresher, longer. I like to think stem removal is optional. As a person who enjoys the skin of many veggies, and actually enjoy the (crunchy) diced stems of most leaves (cilantro) -- no good nutrient goes to waste.

Really short video with information I did not find helpful at all!!! I have always eaten Spinach with the stem, cooked or as a Salad, and do not plan to change that since I do not find it makes the Spinach "bitter" at all. I love my Spinach as is!
- 2/2/13
When I use spinach to make green smoothies (with blueberries, banana + plain lo-fat yogurt, etc) I leave the stems attached. Question for Chef Meg: Is it okay to freeze spinach for later use without blanching first?
- 1/1/13
I've always eaten the stem...and never noticed any aftertaste! How time consuming! Yikes! I think I was better off not knowing this tip! Lol
- 10/28/12
To everyone mentioning keeping the stems for the fiber, please note that "fiber" and "fibrous" are 2 totally different words. For instance, meats like steak are fibrous because of the bands of indigestible material (connective tissue) that hold the meat (muscle) together, but have no fiber.

Cool. Lol, I put spinach on my hubby's sandwiches for lunch. He has commented on me feeding him weeds. He's a good sport, I never thought about cutting off the stem....I know he will appreciate this!! Thank you. I would never had thought of this on my own ;)
- 7/17/12
Yeah interesting never thought we needed to do that. But I have to agree w/everyone that if it's baby spinach, those stems are pretty tender anyhow.
- 7/17/12
Great advice! I didn't know about the stem either; but I sure do know what you mean about "the bite after you've bitten". Now I'm looking forward to adding spinach to my next grocery list.

I usually buy baby spinach and I've never noticed the stem being enough of a problem for me to want to do anything with it... - 3/17/13
I would think the stem would give you more fiber, never even though about removing. - 3/12/13

The stems are my fav. part! - 2/7/13

I have tried taking the stems off of spinach before and found that the spinach wasn't bitter by doing so. - 1/22/13
Good ideas but I agree that closed captioning would be nice. - 1/21/13
Sometimes we need the extra fiber... - 1/19/13

I haven't been stemming them but I will now. - 11/30/12
Never knew about removing the stem. Thanks for the tip! - 11/22/12
I always eat the stem, There is no after taste, as far as I'm concerned. - 10/29/12

I've always taken the stems off my baby spinach; not because I knew you were supposed to but because I just don't like that part! - 10/19/12

Video so short, didn't realize that was all there was to prepping spinach. Thanks! - 10/16/12
I had never heard of de-stemming spinach. Thanks! - 10/16/12
I pinch off part of the stem but don't worry about getting all of it. It's good for you too. - 9/16/12
Neat information, always ate it with the stem on. - 8/13/12
fiber, we need. I keep stems on too! - 7/21/12
Did not know that. Thanks - 7/17/12
My mom can't eat lettuce because of her stomach, but she can usually eat spinach. I'll be sure to tell her to de-stem. - 7/17/12

I love spinach it is sooooo versatile - 7/17/12
I agree, waste of good vitamins throwing the stems out..cut them smaller if you cant chew them, I been chewing them for years. - 6/12/12
Washing /rinsing spinach makes it waterlogged, soggy. Terrible on my salads. Isn't ok to use the prepackaged stuff just out of the bag? - 6/12/12
I always keep the stems on baby spinach, what a waste to cut them off! It is not old huge leaves, but tender young ones... Shame. - 6/12/12
Why would you get rid of edible fiber? Seem like a lot of work...just buy baby spinach :) - 4/12/12
Who knew? I just love these mini-videos from Chef Meg!!! - 4/5/12
Thanks for the tips. - 4/4/12
I didn't know that about the stem! You learn something new each day! - 4/4/12
Great tip, thanks - 4/4/12
thanks - all of your tips are helping me a lot! - 4/4/12
Cool trick! - 2/26/12
Thanks for the tip. - 2/24/12
I just bought baby spinach today and i will do this tonight when I serve it with my salmon!
- 2/23/12
I don't do this with the baby spinach; the larger version does need it. - 2/23/12
Great advice! I didn't know about the stem either; but I sure do know what you mean about "the bite after you've bitten". Now I'm looking forward to adding spinach to my next grocery list. - 2/23/12

Looks easy enough. It'd be nice if the videos had close caption for those of use who are hearing impaired. - 2/23/12
Will do! - 2/23/12
