Maple syrup (if pure, which should be!) is higher calories than butter. Use agave instead. Or maybe they are talking about fake maple syrup being cheaper, not sure. I don't do any of this stuff anyways. But a bagel with a topping is actually higher calorie than a glazed donut usually. But more filling too.

My favorite of the ways to shave calories are to split a bottle of regular soda with a friend, drink sparkling water instead of soda pop, drink skim milk or low-fat milk instead of whole milk, drink non-alcoholic beer instead of regular beer, eat an orange instead of drinking a glass of orange juice, topping waffles with maple syrup or nonfat Greek yogurt instead of butter or margarine, grabbing a small bagel instead of a medium bagel, eating turkey sausage instead of pork sausage, eating 3/4 cup oatmeal instead of 1.5 cups oatmeal, snacking on tortilla chips instead of potato chips, eating frozen fries (thawed and baked in the oven) instead of fast food fries, eat grilled onions instead of deep fried onion rings, use mozzarella cheese instead of Swiss cheese on a sandwich, draining canned fruit, cutting a 6 oz steak in half and taking the other portion home for another meal, order skinless chicken instead of skin on chicken, eating a fat free hot dog instead of a regular hot dog, putting turkey breast instead of hard salami on a sandwich, eating thin crust pizza instead of thick crust pizza, putting vegetable toppings instead of pepperoni on pizza, ordering steamed rice instead of fried rice, eating only half of a bun, using marinara sauce instead of Alfredo sauce, topping salad with reduced fat dressing instead of regular dressing, requesting no croutons on your salad, using nonfat plain Greek yogurt instead of regular sour cream, using Miracle Whip (lite or regular) or fat free mayonnaise dressing instead of real mayonnaise, serving ice cream in a dish or sugar cone instead of a waffle cone, eating low-fat frozen yogurt or reduced fat ice cream instead of regular ice cream, eating a fresh apple instead of apple pie, and eating strawberries topped with Cool Whip Lite whipped topping instead of eating strawberry ice cream.
