I am wondering when they suggest a portion the size of your fist,
does that mean "one thing" the size of your fist or one part of your meal.
I am wondering if I can have three "fist sized" items for one meal.

That is all good and well. But with such legally small proportions what do we do to not be hungry? Its absolutley crazy. I stay busy during the day. But in the evening I graze. If I eat such small portions I will really stuff my mouth. I need some good advice. Going to the message board.

Oh my! Such passive aggressive angst! Dice are those things you throw when you play yahtzee or back gammon. A baseball is a baseball. A softball is a softball. A billiard ball is the thing that rolls around on a pool table. A deck of cards is the thing you play pinocle with your grandma with. A hockey puck is that itty bitty thing that slides around the ice while the players in the OLYMPICS push it around with sticks. Surely you folks have seen ALL these things before and not at a casino. Sheesh.

Wow, I had no idea that 'A PORTION' was so small. I figured that if I cut my portions to that of a childs portion that would do the trick. Shows how wrong I was. Thank you so much for the info. My partner will now look at me more strangely when I put REAL PORTIONS on my plate. Thanks again

I had no idea portions were that skewed! Thanks for relating the sizes to everyday objects; I find it much easier than trying to imagine what 1/4 cup looks like! I bought a portion guide that you can lay on your plate to help figure sizes and am really looking forward to working with that until I get comfortable doing the measuring myself!

Good article, but I'll go with Silentsybil and use my hand. Sounds like a guy made this chart - having never seen a hockey puck, I am already having a hard time with that. a baseball? is this a softball? or the small hard ball? I'll just use my hand. My favorite measurement is that 1 oz of cheese is the size of your thumb.

Decent article but the comparisons were confusing. My mom is going to school to be a chef and some of the greatest comparisons she gave me were from my hand. Like a cup or medium sized vegetable/fruit is approx. the size of your fist (unless you have huge man-sized fists) and 3.4 oz of meat can fit in the palm of your hand. I'm sure there are other, more familiar things we can use. As for the juice and hockey puck thing, I'm not sure there is anything better because companies purposefully try to decieve you with how much food you're really getting by changing the way the bottle looks. I try to carefully read how many ounces are in the bottle and how many sugars are in the drink compared to the ounces to see if it's even worth buying the juice because a lot of juices are comparable to sodas as far as extra sugars go. I also go with fewer ingrediants I'm unfamiliar with. If I can't even pronounce the stuff in the bottle without concentrating a lot then it's not something on my list.
