When I was a youngster, we had Wonder Bread with the red yellow and blue balloons that built strong bodies eight ways! Now, we have to exercise!

I am 65 and newly diagnosed with osteopenia. I am skeptical about the benefit -- for me -- of getting up out of my chair without using my arms. I am in a great deal of pain, not from the osteopenia, so I have to use common sense here. Yes, it would be great to improve my balance, and I am working on that. However, if getting up without at least using my hands for balance (not support) puts me at risk for falling, it seems safer for me to continue to use my hands. My primary goal is to avoid falls, secondary goal is to improve balance overall. I've done chair exercises for years, and often include routines that include lowering myself into my chair slowly without hands, and slowly rising, but dang, it hurts. Will have to look over my exercises options or those that can help me improve bone strength without exacerbating my pain or putting me at higher risk of falls.

I'm hoping bone density testing is included in the annual exam supposedly covered under the Affordable Care Act. I just have to be careful of what I say in the exam room. Probably best just to be quiet, eh?
