This is a modified version of my original Fiber One protein bar recipe posted on my blog. This one cuts out the artificial sweeteners except what is already present in your protein powder of choice, and adds in a bit of coconut for flavor and texture. It tastes like a krispie treat smooshed on top of a chocolate Tootsie Roll infused with just a hint of coconut, raisin, and peanut butter, and it is dairy-free and artificial sweetener free except for the protein powder. You can try to find a Stevia-sweetened, non-dairy protein powder if you like. Also, note that one bar has over 7 grams of fiber, which is over 1/4 of your recommended daily intake.

At 226 calories, 29 g carbs (7 g fiber), 20 g protein, and 6 g fat, this is suitable as a portable meal replacement or post-workout snack for those of you doing Body-for-Life, South Beach, the Zone, or other similar plans.Submitted by: CAUSTICMUSE

Considered Egyptian "fast food", this is a fantastic recipe! Not like American fast food! It's different, for certain, but very filling and completely "clean" if you can get fresh tomato sauce!

This can be a vegetarian dish because traditional Koshari has NO CHICKEN in it. I added it in this recipe (and listed as optional) because I wanted added protein (and my husband refuses to eat a dish without meat!).

The "optional" ingredients truly are optional, however, they are included in the nutritional value.

I made these bars on a whim while craving a pumpkin-y granola bar that would keep me full (with lots of fiber and protein). Feel free to play with the spices and cut down on the sugar as you see fit! The soy nuts could easily be exchanged for any nut (something like pecans would probably taste a bit more fall-like).

Also feel free to cut them up into smaller servings! I wanted mine to serve as breakfast or a mini-meal so I made them slightly bigger.

I had trouble getting the crust to stay together when I added the bar mixture. Any suggestions on how to alter the recipe to fix this are more than welcome! Enjoy!Submitted by: ERIN310R

Don't expect it to taste like Jamba Juice! Their crap is full of sugar and calories. This is a great way to start the day with 2 or 3 of your fruit and veggie servings.

I make a variety of smoothies using these three basic ingredients: Vanilla flavored Nitro-Peak Whey Protein Powder, ground flax seed, and Kirkland (or Metamucil) psyllium husk fiber (smooth texture, sugar-free, orange flavored).

The Nitro-Peak has different types of whey proteins which are most absorbable and metabolize over an extended period of time -- and it tastes as good as this sort of thing can. I get it at www.vitaminshoppe.com in the biggest size. I use a full or half scoop depending how much protein I plan to eat the rest of the day.

I eat a healthy diet and it's still hard to ensure getting enough fiber, so I take some every day in the form of psyllium husk -- I also need to because of the effect my daily iron pills have on me.

The flax is full of Omega 3's and fiber -- you must eat it ground to get the benefits; whole seed will pass right through you.

My regular smoothies have the following in addition the the smoothie base of protein-fiber-flax-ice-water:
* 1 carrot, 1 serving frozen berries, & 1/2 cup kefir
* 1 sm zucchini, 1 carrot, half an apple
* 2 cups beet greens (when I get a bunch of fresh beets), 1 carrot, 60 g banana

I use plain lowfat Kefir (Lifeway is the tastiest, but Trader Joe's is cheaper, and since I usually mix it with stuff it doesn't matter). Kefir, a drinkable sort of yogurt, has more probiotics and less crap than most yogurts. Don't use flavored yogurts unless you want to add sugar calories. And sugar-free yogurts have preservatives, gelatins, and fake sweeteners -- and come in little plastic containers that most municipalities don't recycle. Kefir comes in #2 plastic.
