Green Apple and Chicken Slow-Cooker Stew

1 lb. potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/4" thick1 lb. carrots, sliced 1/4" thick1 lg. tangy green apple (Granny Smith is ideal), with peel, thinly sliced6 boneless skinless chicken breast halves2 cloves garlic, finely chopped1 T. dark brown sugar1 t. salt1/2 t. cayenne pepper1/4 t. freshly grated nutmeg1/8 t. ground cloves1 c. unsweetened apple juice2 T. fresh lemon juice
Layer the potatoes, carrots, and apple in a slow cooker. Cover with the chicken breasts.
Sprinkle with the garlic, brown sugar, salt, cayenne, nutmeg, and cloves. Pour the apple juice and lemon juice other the top.
cover and cook on low until the chicken and vegetables are very tender, 6-8 hrs. Serve hot.
