Split Pea and Barley Soup

Ingredients
3 cups or 1 bag of split peas1 onion, chopped6 cloves garlic (fewer, if preferred)3 stalks celery, chopped2 carrots, chopped1 cup pearled barleyBay leafSalt and pepper to taste
Directions
Saute the onion in water. Press garlic into onion and cook another minute or two. Add the split peas and cover with broth. Bring to a boil. Add the celery, carrots, bay leaf and barley and boil gently until the split peas and barley are soft. Add more broth or water if needed to keep the soup covered. Salt and pepper to taste.

This is a throw-it-together-until-it-looks-and-tastes-right kind of meal, so feel free to add or subtract ingredients as you like!
