Ingredients
Directions
1 cake of tofu (12 ounces), pressed1 TBSP plus 2 tsp soy sauce1 TBSP water1 TBSP dark sesame oil1 TSP tomato paste (optional)1 TSP rice vinegar1 TSP mild honey or sugar1/2 TSP groun anise**grinding 3/4 to 1 tsp of whole anise seeds with a mortar and pestle or small electric grinder will yield about 1/2 TSP ground
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Cut the pressed tofu horizontally into 3 slices. Stack the slices and then cut through all three layers on the two diagnals, making an X. This will yield 12 triangles of tofu. Combine all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl and stir until well blended.
Arrange the triangles in a baking dish and cover with the sauce. Bake, uncovered, for about 35 minutes, carefully turning the tofu with a spatula every 10 minutes. When the tofu has a taut, seared appearance and the sauce has mostly evaporated, it is ready to serve.
